Test Driver Ratings & Comments
Acceleration commentsPretty good poke right off the line, a bit of front wheelspin despite the AWD. Highest trap speed was on first run. Not an exceptionally hard revver. Shifts are reasonably quick, come between 6,200-6,400, even in Manual mode because at full throttle it upshifts for itself. Manual shifting is via S mode with steering-wheel paddles. Does not blip throttle on downshifts.
Braking commentsLong-travel, slightly spongy pedal on the first and last stops. Noticeable fade by the end. Well-controlled stops, minimal nosedive. Second stop was shortest at 121 feet. Third stop was longest at 124 feet. Plenty of brake odor.
Handling commentsSkid pad: Even with some ESC intervention (the system can't be fully defeated, only traction control can be shut off), driver adjustment of the throttle has a major effect on the MKZ. Meaning, lifting off the throttle lets the tail swing out sharply, which helps bring the front back in to curb understeer. Plus, it's fun to play with the over-/understeer. Slalom: The MKZ corners surprisingly flat. Steering responds intuitively, not too quickly, not too slowly, and the right amount of assist. The two factors keeping it from going a mph or 2 quicker were the ESC system's brake intervention and the relatively low-grip Michelin Primacy tires "Green" tires. But overall, a decent performance for a luxury sedan.
