We split the cost of the second transmission with Lexus, and they paid for the third transmission since #2 failed within the 12 month warranty. I'll bet you any money within the next 30 days your transmission will be gone. These transmissions on the 2000 and 2001 RX 300 were designed poorly and should have been recalled. We had two in the family and both transmissions went out at the same mileage 108,000. Never towed anything, no teenage drivers. Driven like a cupcake.

The RX 300 Transmission through mid 2002 was designed with aluminum gearing that could not handle the torque of AWD. We had two one a year 2000 and a 2002 one failed at 103,000 and the other at 106,000. All were driven by carfeul mature drivers, never towed anything, or gone off road. This transmission is junk. I am looking at a 2000 Lexus RX 300 which has been well maintained but has 150,000 miles on it. I have verified the maintance with service records. My friends are telling me that I am crazy to even look at a car with that kind of milage, but I have a lot of faith in Toyota. I plan to have an different dealership look at the car to also give ... • jr: reviews of the RX300 and RX330

You stated the RX300 "was about the highest rated vehicle on the market". Yeah, that was true back in 1999 and 2000, but there have been several reviews and premium SUV comparos since 2001 in which the RX300 was no longer rated among the best. Newer models had surpassed the RX300, according to the automotive critics. Just look at recent reviews here in Edmunds if you don't believe me. As an ... Read More

We took delivery of our Breakwater Blue/Ivory RX on Saturday. We got the nav/levinson package. We are SO impressed of how much it feels like our GS430 instead of the 2000 RX300 we're replacing. I think Lexus did a great job in fine tuning an already nice vehicle and we're very happy so far. We couldn't get the DVD (without waiting 90 days) and I still haven't found an aftermarket system ... I have now owned my 2000 RX300 for 2 days. Bought it from a Lexus dealer in San Diego. It was leased and has only 16,800 miles on it. I did pay to get the "certified" version and also paid to get the "extra" 2 years on the certified extended warranty. So, I have 5 full years from date of purchase and 83,200 miles left on the warranty. Paid top dollar, ... Read More

Carboy 84 Yes, I did have some trepidation about buying a first year model, but IMHO Lexus has proved itself adept in maintaining their usual quality in these models. Plus, I see it as more of a refinement of the 300's rather than a newly designed one. I wanted a performance package with the nav but found out that at least initially, these limited models were not being offered in our ... Read More

Just got my 2000 AWD serviced at Lexus of Rockville (MD), 60k miles, total bill $481.67. I've generally had good service for a good price there, kinda ambivalent about this trip. Initially I was quoted $800+ for the 60k service, so I dug into it. The two items they wanted to do that were not in the manual were "Replace Transmission and Differential oil" and "Replace Sparkplugs". I was told the ... Read More

I own a 2000 RX300. A few days ago I got a letter from Lexus stating that a small number of owners have reported engine damage from a condition know as oil gelling or sludge. While I don't think my rx300 has this condition, I would like hear feed back from other owners. The letter says it's because the oil isn't changed often enough. The letter further states that Lexus is ... Read More

We purchased 2002 RX 3 weeks ago. Prior to going to Lexus dealer to complete the purchase, we stopped in at a nearby Toyota dealer to test drive an HL, etc.. We were trading a 2000 Camry XLE (purchased from this dealer). For curiosity we asked them give us their best deal (with full knowledge of our Lexus deal and our intent to complete the deal that evening). Anyway, RX MSRP ... Read More

I don't know about the 2000, but I hardwired my 1999, which did NOT have a connector plug by tapping into the wiring harness using 3M #804 Scotchlok self-stripping connectors. Also used the Hoppy #46255 power taillight converter trailer wiring kit. You can search for my post of the complete text covering this installation. I bought a pre-owned 2000 AWD, no NAV, w/ low mileage at what I believe was a great price. Nice car! I really like it so far. I've already put 350 miles on it in ... Read More

Seeking some advice regarding maintenance of my 2000 RX 300. Would you recommend that I take my car to the Lexus dealer for the 10,000 mile maintenance(who would charge > $100) or do you think I can take it to the local Jiffy Lube/Toyota dealer(who would charge around $30) to get the oil change done plus topping of all fluids. And the RX300 is 50/50, the following info is straight from the Lexus site. 9/7/2000 press release. Real Four-Wheel Drive, Made Easy: The transmission in the four-wheel drive RX 300 features an integrated transfer case and a viscous center differential that provides a 50/50 front-to-rear power ... The 1,500 package discount, puts the fwd with leather, roof, CD changer, wood wheel at $37,600. Mine listed for $37,700 and had no wood wheel, no stability control, no traction control, and none of the 2001 upgrades. I guess I should ... Read More
