I have a LS 400 2000. Going well for last 13 years until last month. Starting problems. Dealer changed battery. Did not use for 3 days and car did not start. This time they changed the alternator. OK for 2 weeks. Again did not use for 4 days and car did not start. They said maybe an electrical drain somewhere they cannot figure out. All fuses are good. I just finished sending a reply to Lexus Corp. in Torrance, Ca. Their "Customer Satisfaction" rep told me he could not put me in touch with someone "over his head". Here is part of what I said: "I recently submitted a safety complaint with a suggestion to correct the problem, and I find Lexus Corporate's apology unsatisfactory. You simply say "We apologize that you are displeased with the functionality of the ... Read More

Glad to hear that things are ok with your starter, at about 100,000 miles I switched to mobil one synthetic oil I have read that the lexus motor gets a lot of value from synthetic oil and it also takes half of the normal starting amps on the starter due to how well the oil lubricates the engine. I change my oil at 10,000 miles which is ok using synthetic oil ... Read More

This is an excellent discussion. I am in the market for a 05 LS 430 and had numerous discussions about the tires with the dealer. It would be helpful to potential buyers if Lexus put the a warning in their brochure similar to Mercedes: “High performance tires are optimized for performance driving and may provide reduced ride comfort, increase tire noise, substantially increased tire tread wear and greater susceptibility to damage ... Hi! Just wondering how you like your LS430 by now? I have had mine since last Nov and like it very much. I had a 1997 LS 400 before. The only problem I have is I don't think it rides as smooth as my 97. They tell me its because of the 16" tires. One thing I like is the service it has given me. In the past I have also ... I think our 1990 LS 400 Lexus is a fine riding and handling car. I think it is more prone to troubles than it should be. It has been serviced every time at the dealer my wife purchased it through. We now have 79,993 miles. The airbag light came on about 50k miles dealer wants $2000 to repair. Rearview mirror went out at about 55k miles repair estimate $1200. Gas gauge ... Read More

I'm currently taxing my research skills to come to a decision on what car to buy. I have a 45,000 yearly commute in a Northeastern state. My current car is a '95 Avalon XL with 252,000 highway miles on it that still rides like a champ and has never stranded me or needed more than fluid changes, preventative timing belt change, battery, brakes. I have access to auctions, thus lower prices ... Read More

The current LS is not fairly new. It was unveiled in January 2000 at the Detroit Auto Show and went on sale in the fall of 2000 as a 2001. It is now entering its fourth year. Lexus does not have long model cycles. Typically their cars run for five years, with a cosmetic freshening in the fourth year. So, what Lexus is doing follows their history. I'm in the market for a 98/99 LS 400. Despite it being one of the most reliable automobiles out there, I'd like to purchase an extended warranty. I'm finding some very attractive deals on private party purchases - does anyone know if Lexus will certify (and thus provide their 100k mile warranty) to a car I purchase from a private party. I'm looking for a 98,99 or 2000, depending on price condition etc. Has anyone shopped the Lexus dealers for a used one, and if so what are your impressions? My initial impression is that the dealers cling to a high price and have yet to see the effects of the present economy.

alan_s that is exactly the shuddering/rumbling that I have with my LS 400, though I notice it at between 2000-3000 rpm, the speed at that rpm is probably around 50-55 mph. Anyway, I am going to get a full chemical flush of the transmission, and refilled with the newer Lexus Type IV fluid next week, and I'll tell you if that helps at all. The "pulling out of the vents" refers to the A/C vents atop the automatic climate control unit. When you face the vent direction downwards this allows the tips of your fingers to grab the housing surronding the vents. if you pull outward and downward firmly the whole face with vents pops out exposing 2 screws holding auto climate with LCD in its place. I greatly appreciate all your comments in response to my query about the throttle tip-in problem I have with my 99 LS 400. I guess it’s a very subjective thing. What I consider to be intolerable lurvhing just doesn’t affect others the same way. The comments by “enigmaone” to the effect that he (she?) is completely undisturbed by it leads me to this conclusion. I am assuming that we are both ... Read More
