What's New for 2014
The 2014 Lexus IS 250 will be fully redesigned. Highlights include a retuned suspension, improved seats and additional interior room.
Introduction
In the wake of the newly overhauled GS 350, we expected similar leaps forward of athleticism from the 2014 Lexus IS sport sedan. Instead, it appears that Lexus has a different idea in mind, making the redesigned 2014 model more luxurious and comfortable.
The new IS rides on a longer wheelbase than before. Lexus hasn't said exactly how much longer, but given the larger rear seat area we've observed, we'll say at least 1.5 inches. That's commendable and welcome in the notoriously cramped IS, but still only about halfway to closing the gap between the current IS's rear legroom and that of competitors like the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series.
The new 2014 Lexus IS 250 carries over its 204-horsepower 2.5-liter V6 and six-speed automatic transmission, but now features a stiffer body structure and a retuned suspension that helps make the IS feel more stable on the freeway. A revised rear suspension design taken from the new GS sedan also opens up some trunk space. In our initial testing of a prototype IS, however, we found the new car's handling around corners to be less dynamic and sharp than it was before.
On the plus side, the new IS benefits from revised front seats that are meant to be more comfortable than before. An improved interior with Lexus' latest electronics should also be part of the redesign.
