2013 Lexus GS 350: Yellow Tinted Windows

June 28, 2013

2013 Lexus GS 350

Our Tesla has a tinted windshield, which is odd, but our Lexus GS 350 seems to have oddly yellow-tinted side windows. Out front everything is normal, but to the side it looks like you're somewhere in Mexico in Steven Soderbergh's stylized movie "Traffic." Note the color difference of the building and pavement on each side of the A pillar, as well as the side view mirror that further enhances the jaundice effect.

I'll try to wear my blue-tinted sunglasses next time I drive the GS just to even things out.

That's a whole bunch of color temperatures in one photo.

How effective is the factory auto-tinting, I wonder? Does it have a sunblock rating? I've noticed many Mercs have a sea-foam tint to their windows, which looked distinctive.

i think solar tinting is fairly common in expensive models from several brands. yellow, however, seems like sort of an off-putting color choice.

In the case of the mirror, it probably has some type of optical coating that reduces glare at night, but has a yellow cast in daytime.

Yellow provides better and more comfortable contrast for safety. Same reason they use yellow for legal pads.

@akula1, how is a lawyer made safer with a yellow pad? Or is the public safer...?

Blue tinted mirrors are standard on BMWs, the choice of yellow seems... interesting.
