Overview

The Range Rover Sport is the smaller, more affordable version of Land Rover's flagship Range Rover SUV. Both share similar designs, features and engines, but the Sport provides less cargo and rear seat space. Like its bigger brother, the Range Rover Sport is tuned for comfort not handling, so don't let the Sport name make you think otherwise. But like most Land Rovers, it boasts impressive off-road credentials and a luxurious cabin. A redesigned model was introduced last year, and for 2024, a new SV performance model joins the lineup and the plug-in hybrid powertrain gets a power boost.

Edmunds spotlight: SV power or Autobiography efficiency?

The SE and SE Dynamic models provide adequate power and efficiency, but if you're looking for more, opt for the Autobiography or the new SV Edition One. The SV Edition One is the performance version of the Sport, packing a 626-horsepower turbocharged V8 that blasts the luxury SUV to 60 mph in an estimated time of just 3.6 seconds. Other performance goodies include 23-inch lightweight forged wheels, Brembo brakes, a unique SV drive mode and a sophisticated adaptive air suspension system called 6D Dynamics. The Autobiography is exclusively powered by a plug-in hybrid system that received a 108-horsepower bump this year — to a whopping 542 hp. It also provides a lengthy estimated all-electric driving range of 53 miles.

Competitors to consider

The Range Rover Sport is an alluring SUV that touts a distinctive design, excellent off-road capability, and plenty of luxury and tech. But if you want an SUV with a lower price tag or superior handling, check out its rivals. The Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5, Genesis GV80 and Porsche Cayenne all offer performance versions and sporty coupe models (GLE Coupe, X6, GV80 Coupe and Cayenne Coupe, respectively). How does the Range Rover Sport drive? The Range Rover Sport is available with a variety of powertrains that range from a base six-cylinder to a plug-in hybrid and a muscular turbocharged V8. Our test vehicle was equipped with the midlevel 395-hp P400. At the Edmunds test track, it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, which is adequate acceleration for a luxury SUV. Unless you're in the sporty Dynamic drive mode, the vehicle can feel slow to respond when you suddenly press on the gas. Otherwise, power delivery is smooth and the engine feels strong at high rpm.

Despite the name, the Range Rover Sport isn't really sporty around turns. It lacks grip and the stability control system intervenes abruptly at relatively modest speeds. The suspension is softly tuned, so the Range Rover Sport leans in corners and suffers from a bit of dive when you hit the brakes. The Range Rover's steering, too, doesn't feel quite as direct as what competitors offer. But on the upside, the adjustable air suspension can be raised for better clearance off-road, and capability is aided further by Land Rover's solid all-wheel-drive system.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Range Rover Sport? There's a certain level of comfort expected from anything wearing a Range Rover badge, but the latest Range Rover Sport doesn't quite deliver on what we expect. That's not to say it's uncomfortable. The seats have excellent padding and decent support in both rows. The seatback angle is adjustable in the rear, so passengers in both rows should be set. It's generally quiet, too, with only a mild amount of wind and road noise entering the cabin.

But ride comfort disappoints. Given the standard air suspension, we expected the Range Rover Sport to mute most imperfections in the road. It didn't. Bumps and potholes won't rattle your fillings, but you still feel more of the road than we might expect in a luxury SUV. Part of the blame is likely down to our test vehicle's massive 23-inch wheels. We suggest sticking with the standard 21-inch wheels for their additional sidewall. The climate control system is a letdown too. While the controls are easy to use, the fans are loud and the AC shuts off when the engine's stop-start feature engages at stoplights.

Interior

How’s the interior? The Range Rover Sport's infotainment screen is large and placed low enough that it doesn't block the view out of the windshield. The resolution is crisp but not as responsive as what you'll find in the competition. The interface is touchscreen-only, but Land Rover thankfully doesn't include the climate controls in the infotainment system. Two knobs can be turned, pushed or pulled to adjust the temperature or fan speed or turn on the heated seats.

There's plenty of space in both rows, and the adjustable air suspension can lower the Sport to make it easier to get in and out. The driving position is commanding and upright, and the relatively thin roof pillars and upright windows allow for good visibility in all directions. Our test vehicle had the optional heated windshield. It's great in icy weather, but some drivers found their focus thrown off by the tiny heating elements.

Technology

How’s the tech? Device connectivity is solid, with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Both have wireless connectivity, and there are a handful of USB-C and USB-A ports throughout both rows as well as a wireless charging pad. We also like how the Range Rover Sport's integrated navigation system is easy to operate. On the downside, the voice commands lack the breadth of function and natural language recognition you find in other luxury SUVs.

The Range Rover Sport comes with many standard driver aids, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning and surround-view cameras. The systems work well, holding tight gaps and braking gently. We didn't notice any errors or unnecessary braking from the emergency systems either.

Storage

7.5/10

How’s the storage? The Range Rover Sport offers 31.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row. Drop the 40/20/40-split folding rear seats and the area opens up to 53.0 cubic feet. Those are midpack numbers for the class, with rivals from Mercedes and BMW offering more space in the rear. We do like that the air suspension can be lowered with the touch of a button in the hatch to make loading and unloading cargo easier. The seats can be folded or raised with a button too, so no crawling around to find some manual release handles.

Storage up front isn't quite as good. While the center console is deep, the small opening limits what you can put inside. Also, the largest bin is below the sliding cupholders and can't be accessed without removing drinks. Seems like a bad design to us. Fitting and installing a car seat shouldn't be an issue. The rear anchors are easy to access, and the air suspension helps make everything less of a climb.

Fuel Economy

How’s the fuel economy? Setting aside the available plug-in hybrid powertrain, the Range Rover Sport has EPA-estimated fuel economy between 18 and 21 mpg combined depending on which engine you opt for. Our SE Dynamic had the P400 inline-six powertrain that's estimated at 21 mpg combined. That's about average for the class. On our mixed-driving evaluation route, we saw 20.2 mpg, a bit disappointing given that most vehicles at least meet if not exceed their EPA combined estimates in our testing.

Is the Range Rover Sport a good value? The Range Rover Sport is one of the most premium SUVs you'll find on sale today, but be prepared to pay for that luxury. The interior looks and feels better than most of the competition, with a clean design and lots of upscale materials for the trim on the dash, doors and center console. The leather upholstery is soft, and nothing you touch feels cheap. But Land Rover charges more for the Range Rover Sport than rivals from Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and others. Standard features are pretty similar to the competition, but the price point simply doesn't compare to what you can find elsewhere.

Land Rover includes a four-year/50,000-miles basic and powertrain warranty. The Sport has six years and unlimited miles of rust protection. You also get four years or 50,000 miles of roadside maintenance. That's all about average, though some brands also include a handful of free scheduled service visits.

Wildcard

The third-generation Range Rover Sport looks and feels more like the full-size Range Rover than ever. The design both inside and out is less showy than some rivals without looking boring. It's clean and buttoned-up rather than all in your face with a massive maw of a grille. The Range Rover lineup as a whole is wider than ever, taking a bit of the charm and exclusivity out of the equation, but as a whole the Range Rover Sport packs the premium feel that we've come to expect over the years.

But that charm is dampened by a less than stellar driving experience. While few off-roaders are as comfortable as the Range Rover Sport, numb feedback and the soft suspension sap most of the fun out of driving on the street. A comfortable cruiser, sure, but the Sport isn't nearly as engaging on a day-to-day basis as its rivals.

Which Range Rover Sport does Edmunds recommend?

Most luxury SUV shoppers will be happy with the base P360 SE model, but if you're in the market for a high-dollar SUV like the Range Rover Sport, why not opt for the more powerful and stylish P400 SE Dynamic? Our recommended trim includes the long list of standard features from the base model and adds a nice dose of power and unique exterior styling, setting it apart from the entry model. The optional panoramic sunroof is a worthy addition and, for improved handling, add the Stormer Handling Pack.

What is the Range Rover Sport?

Redesigned just a couple years ago, the Range Rover Sport is the new money, more dynamic understudy to the old money, big luxury Range Rover. Land Rover says there's little crossover between the customers of these two iconic products, with the Range Rover Sport having its own unique appeal.
That's no more obvious than here, with the new Range Rover Sport SV being a new performance flagship for the 2024 model year lineup. The SV gains a more powerful V8, a "world first" hydraulically interlinked air suspension system and lightweight equipment like 23-inch carbon-fiber wheels.

What's under the Range Rover Sport's hood?

The Range Rover Sport hosts a range of revisions for 2024. The new P550e plug-in hybrid replaces the previous P440e; it still features a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six but output is increased significantly, rising from 434 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque to 542 hp and 590 lb-ft. Land Rover says the substantial increase in power is enough to rocket the Range Rover Sport P550e from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. This compares favorably to the P440e's estimated acceleration time of 5.5 seconds. The plug-in hybrid component provides as much as 51 miles of electric-only driving, according to Land Rover.

If you aren't ready to step all the way up to the PHEV, a non-hybrid turbocharged six-cylinder powers more modest versions of the Range Rover Sport. The P360 SE kicks things off with 355 hp, with the next-level P400 SE Dynamic bumping output to 395 hp. All Range Rover Sports feature an eight-speed transmission and all-wheel drive, though if you're intent on taking your luxury SUV off-road, only the P550e and above come with a low ratio transfer case as standard.

Topping the model lineup is the 2024 Range Rover Sport SV. Replacing the high-end SVR of the previous generation, the SV is powered by a new 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with mild hybrid technology. The SV's powertrain delivers 626 hp and 553 lb-ft — which is a useful 51 hp and 37 lb-ft more than the supercharged 5.0-liter V8 of its SVR predecessor. That's enough to allow the Range Rover Sport SV to reach 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds, on to a top speed of 180 mph.

The hood above that new V8 is significant, too, because in the SV it's made of carbon fiber. This — along with other SV options of 23-inch carbon-fiber wheels and eight-piston Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes — highlights the lengths Land Rover's engineers have gone not just to produce more power with this sporting flagship model but to also allow the Range Rover Sport SV driver the means with which to really exploit it.

How's the Range Rover Sport's interior?

The Range Rover Sport's interior mixes modern tech with pleasingly chunky controls for some of the major functions including seat heating and ventilation. The user interface of the 13.1-inch central curved touchscreen with haptic controls is a vast improvement over the previous model, and there's a sense of luxury and quality that's a step up over its predecessor, too. Space inside is generous for all passengers, and there's a sizable trunk for your luggage.

The SV builds on those solid foundations by adding a touch of sporting flair throughout, with subtle SV badging and more heavily bolstered, restyled seats with integrated headrests, illuminated SV logos and backs made of carbon fiber. Most obvious in front of the driver is the addition of the SV mode button within the bottom spokes of the contoured steering wheel. Push that, and the Range Rover Sport SV reveals its more performance-oriented nature. It changes the instrumentation to a sport-themed display, as well as adjusts the chassis and engine control systems to more aggressively focused modes. The translucent gearshift paddles also see their edges lit in red to signal that change in character.

How's the Range Rover Sport's tech?

Those edge-lit gearshift paddles are, says Land Rover, a world first in the SV, but they aren't the only features the company claims as all-new and unique for its flagship. The interior uses "3D knit to form" textiles, though it's the chassis system on the SV that really pushes boundaries. The 6D Dynamics air suspension it features uses a combination of air springs and hydraulically linked dampers that allow the Range Rover Sport SV to do without conventional anti-roll (sway) bars. Doing so allows the SV to deliver near roll-free cornering and manages pitch and dive under acceleration and braking, according to Land Rover.

The 6D Dynamics works in conjunction with the SV-tuned settings within the all-wheel drive, rear-wheel steering and electronic driving systems to allow the Range Rover Sport SV to corner at 1.1 g. That figure would be more usually associated with a low-slung sports car rather than an SUV. Impressively, that neck-straining cornering potential the Sport SV achieves is on its standard Michelin all-season tires. These tires are fitted as standard to alloy wheels but can come fitted on optional ultra-lightweight 23-inch carbon-fiber wheels, which are another production first for Land Rover. Other new technology that the SV debuts are newly developed Brembo eight-piston calipers that clutch carbon-ceramic discs.

Other new technologies include what Land Rover describes as a Body and Soul Seats (BASS), which have been developed with Californian firm Subpac, which pioneers tactile audio systems. The BASS adds transducers to the seatbacks, which generate vibrations that relate directly to output from the 29-speaker, 1,430-watt Meridian sound system to create an immersive sensory experience with possible well-being benefits. It might sound like a gimmick, but a chance to experience it briefly at the SV debut underlined that these claims aren't without some substance.

What are the Range Rover Sport's trim levels?
