PerformanceIt takes an aggressive foot on the gas pedal to extract any performance from the engine, but it will get the Evoque moving with some determination. On winding roads, it is sure-footed and confident -- sporty, even.
The 240-hp 2.0-liter Evoque will keep up with competitors, but lacks refinement. It requires full throttle for quick acceleration. Noisy throughout rev range, even at low rpm.
Braking distances are better than average thanks to sporty tires and suspension. Long-travel pedal is a product of the Evoque's off-road heritage. Still, brakes are linear and predictable.
Steering effort is pleasantly light with enough feedback and the Evoque tracks predictably and precisely through turns. Turning circle is tight enough for inner-city U-Turns.
The Evoque responds well in demanding corners. Body roll is kept in check for handling that makes it one of the sportiest SUVs out there, which is a good trade off for the slightly harsh ride.
Power is adequate for most buyers, but slow reactions from the six-speed automatic make it feel unresponsive. Though wide, Evoque feels nimble with a small, city-friendly footprint.
It's no rock crawler, but the Evoque will likely tackle much rougher terrain than you'd expect, thanks to smart electronic aids. It is limited by tires and ground clearance.
ComfortDrivers with sporty aspirations will find ride acceptable. Surface imperfections are felt, but there are no excess body motions.Those looking for a luxury ride may find it harsh. The optional 20s equipped to our tester didn't help.
Front seats are supportive and comfortable with light bolstering and few adjustments besides fore-aft. Rear seats have ample headroom, but limited shoulder/legroom.

InteriorThe Evoque benefits from top-notch interior design, but materials, wide coupe doors, poor rearward visibility and limited cargo area keep us from awarding it a better grade.
The great interior design hides the awkward layout. There's a learning curve associated with the stalks and buttons. Touch screen nav/stereo is slow, low-res and occasionally unresponsive.
The large coupe doors hinder cabin access in tight parking spaces. High H-point and the large doors make for easy entry in open spaces. Rear-seat access is easier than expected.
Despite low roofline and narrow windows, it doesn't feel claustrophobic. Head-, shoulder, hip- and legroom are good up front. Lots of rear headroom. Huge sunroof helps improves perceived space.
Forget about rear visibility via the rear window. You'll have to rely on the rearview camera and the very large side-view mirrors. Parking sensors and camera are standard.
A golf bag won't fit in the narrow and shallow 19.4 cu-ft cargo area with the rear seats upright. Power liftgate is standard. Many interior bins and pockets.
ValueIt's hard to quantify the Evoque from a practical point of view. What you're really paying for is head-turning style, handling and a cool factor that is absent among SUVs.
Build Quality (vs. $)
In terms of overall quality, the Evoque delivers. There's a solidity and refinement about it that meets or beats expectations among SUVs in this price range.
Even though the Evoque is unique, other SUVs in its price range provide more standard and optional features.
For the money, you can get a lot more car, but you won't get this kind of style or capability.
