2017 Land Rover Discovery
Honestly, the Disco gets a bad rap sometimes because it is a Land Rover. The brand has had its issues over the decades, but this 5th generation seems to have it all figured out. Great family vehicle, impossibly amazing off road qualities that most people can’t even fathom how to use fully, and a high end interior that makes it feel luxurious.
The sub luxury brands are all catching … up (Toyota highlander, Hyundai Pallisade, Kia Telluride) but they are all trying to become what the Discovery IS.
While the price can have some sticker shock and service costs can be high, that’s expected for a car in this segment (compare to BMW, Audi, Mercedes and it is quite reasonable)
All in, it’s a reliable vehicle, does all the family stuff you need and is heads above the vehicles desperately trying to say “me too”!
The HSE Luxury is my personal favorite, as everything other trim level just seems to be missing out on all the cool stuff you can actually pack in to this vehicle.
Negative comments about the infotainment system are vastly over rated. I drove the Jaguar F-Type that comes equipped with the exact same system and found it easy to use and quite pretty from an aesthetic point of view. For those that don’t like the onboard system, it has Apple car play and android auto, although that somehow cheapens the experience in my eyes.
I own the HSE Luxury TD6, and while the engine is a little more sluggish than the F Type cousin, it has kore than enough passing power and acceleration for a 7 seater SUV that does it all. Knowing that you “have to” drive it hard once in a while to burn out the engine is a nice perk - eliminating the guilt associated with having fun with a beautifully designed vehicle.
You can fit full size adults comfortable in all 3 rows, and while the LR4 and pre ious owners miss the split tail gate the back “bench” thingy is just another cool thing for LR to throw in just in the name of staying true To it’s brand.
It drives well for it’s size, but not like a sports car. If you want sport performance, go somewhere else. Asking this vehicle to handle tightly in corners is preposterous, as it does so much else! It is a smooth, comfortable ride, with a feeling that the vehicle wants to go off-road at the next opportunity!
This is a vehicle that knows what it is, and gets a 5 star rating is doing exactly what it’s designed to.

UPDATE: We’ve owned our Disco for 3 years now, and it’s the best vehicle we’ve ever owned. Looking at comparabale pricing and mid size SUV’s , we were open to everything out there including the Highlander, Palisade, And Telluride.
At a decent trim level they were all 60k to 70k plus, and we found a 2 yr old disco for 50k. Something felt suspicious, and I was skeptical, but the more I researched the more I liked it.
It’s off road performance is outstanding (just watch the videos on this thing) but the around town carrying kids to soccer practices type driving is superb.
It’s not the fastest vehicle out there - and if you want a sport car in an SUV this isn’t the vehicle for you. It IS however, a sub luxury SUV that looks aggressive just sitting there in the parking lot, is unique enough to be recognizable, and has so many creature comforts to keep everyone in the vehicle happy (all 7 seats have bum warmers - an absolute perk in colder climates!).
We can fit full size adults in all 7 seats (I’m 6’4 and fit in every seat) and while climbing into the back row does require a bit of agility, the space inside is remarkable for a mid size SUV.
