2001 Land Rover Discovery Series II SE 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 8cyl 4A)
Though it's a fairly new car, it's outdated compared to the competitors. The 4.0L V8 (188 hp) is seriously underpowered but I hear that the 2003+ 4.6L version does marginally better. Fuel economy averages 14 mpg...the vehicle is just too heavy for the engine which causes you to really tromp the gas just to keep up in traffic. Expect oil/transfer case/transmission pan gasket leaks everywhere...long-term reliability has me a little nervous. Maintenance costs are expensive & more frequent compared to more modern vehicles. Expect around $900 for the 60k mile service. For commuting, any other luxury SUV would be a better choice. If I make 100k miles without major repairs, I'll be shocked.
Full-time 4wd, not a bad looking car and fairly comfortable with a nice view of the road. You really feel safe in this car. It's one of those cars that you will either really like or really hate. Nothing's wrong with that but just make sure you know which category you fit into before you buy.
If you want an SUV that will feel at home in the Sahara, go for it. If you want it for a daily driver around town, make sure that you can afford the upkeep and don't mind being slower than most. If it had 50 more horsepower and a comparable increase in torque it would be a lot easier to live with.
