Wow!!! My 2006 kia sportage is doing the same thing!! I noticed what I thought was the transmission slipping a few weeks ago. My check engine light is on now. I also noticed a rotten egg smell. From what I researched, that is the catalytic converter. It should be covered under the warranty. I just hope the power issues WILL be fixed with the new converter. I'm calling the dealer on ... After my car warms up the engine starts to bogg down hard for a start from 0-15mph then it smooths out and drives fine. Unless you use "WOT" wide open throttle at greater speeds then 25 then you can feel it a lil. It started when the weather got real cold in the teens and wind chill factor below 0 degrees. The car has 56000 miles on it. Only thing i"ve ... Read More

They state the problem is: "The Stop lamp switch in your vehicle may have been damaged during the assembly process. As a result, the stop lamp switch may malfunction causing one or more of the following conditions to exist: * The brake lights may not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed. ... Read More

Nobody, even the Albuquerque dealer where I purchased the car, could identify what the heck was happening. One time the dealer's mechanic even said that it was my gas cap leaking. LOL! Are they offering or do I need to raise hell with the local Kia dealer to get this rectified at a much lower cost? I don't mind paying 200 for a replacement fee. It's ... Read More

About freak brake lights: ground problems/contacts have been a common issue with the former model...maybe it has been carried on to the new model even if a totally different car..but this kind of "light" problem has happened for decades in all cars anyway. Our 2006 Kia Sportage required new tires after only 22,000 of the 60,000 guaranteed. We had to pay about $200 as 'our part' of replacing all 4 tires. Now THOSE tires have only about 12,000 miles and are already down to 7/32 of the original 10/32. What gives with this tire wear? Glad to hear that you're getting satisfaction with the K&N. The CAI is a cold air intake, and it forces more cold air into the engine. The K&N filter does the same thing as a CAI but on a lesser scale. I ran the KIA from the WV/MD area to the Jersey shore at about 80 mph. I avg'd. 24.44 mpg. I too am laughing at the Toyota and Honda owners ... Read More

Could someone please tell me why Consumer Reports has given the 2005-2006 Kia Sportages such dismal (much worse than average) reliability ratings? I haven't seen anything here that indicates this. Mostly I see that people really like their cars...except for fuel economy (me included)and that very few problems are reported. This is rather distressing - am I to expect my car to fall apart? Obviously, I'm not too car savvy. I ... Read More

I live in the Ottawa area, have a 2006 Sportage V6 and get between 420 to 440 Km per tank (mix of city and highway roughly 60/40 split). You should be getting a little better mileage than you are if it is all highway driving.

This is an educated guess, but I think it very unlikely the Sportage (and Tucson) will get the 3.3L V6 from the Sonata. This is because the base engine on the new Santa Fe is supposed to be the new-and-improved 2.7L V6. I can't see Kia (and Hyundai) putting a more powerful engine in their small SUV than they put in their (base) large SUV. But we can hope.

Just read the largely favorable Car and Driver review online (http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=3&article_id=9396) noting that their only complaints were the seating (soft and tiring) and engine (underpowered). I have also read that Kia is already preparing a new engine for 2006. My own test drives confirm the observations in the article. That having been said, I wonder if I should delay purchase of a 2005 model and wait until next year's version, not ... Read More
