I agree with most of what you say. Seems pretty dumb to discontinue the only remaining affordable AWD wagon. I personally have an '02 OB, but was considering getting a Legacy wagon as a replacement. Well, you know the rest of that story. I don't care for the new OB (Mom has a 2011), but want a CVT vs. a 4-spd AT. No CVT in the Forester leaves it off my ... Read More
I went through that whole smelling gas thing before... I have replaced just about every component in this thing, over the last year. I have NO IDEA what it is. There's no gas smell this time. The check engine light is gone now... but the brake light keeps coming on and going off again. Checked the fluid, there's plenty. I just had new pads put on recently..... WTH?! I hate this ... Do you smell gas? If so, it may be a clamp that needs tightening. That's all that was wrong with mine when the check engine light was on.
I have the same problems going on with my KIA.
After driving in hot weather for an hour or so, the fuel pump shuts off, and the car will only idle. If I turn off the ignition for a second or two, it starts right up again, and may run for 10 minutes, or an hour, or even a month, except when I return to hot weather (over 90 degrees F) it will occur again. Have had the codes read, some ... Read More

Where is the resitor located ? Kia dealer says this is why we only have high speed on blower. Have the part..need install advice.
I am looking for an original radio or radio plug for my 2002 Kia Sportage. Someone cut the plug wires when attempting to replace the original radio with an upgrade but was unsucessful and messed up the interior lighting and auto lock system. The after market plug doesn't work because it doesn't match. I'm looking for a radio plug or an original radio if that is what I can get. Can ... Read More
I bought my 2002 Kia Sportage in February 2010... less than 36 hours off the lot, I tried to put gas in it and was unsuccessful, as it stopped at almost a gallon every time, and then spit the gas back out at me. The dealership I bought it from replaced the gas tank and it was fine. Then it was having difficulty starting, so they replaced the battery. After that, ... Read More
I also have a 2002 Kia Sportage with the same fumes. It happens intermittently. I haven't had it fixed, but my vehicle seems to be using a lot of gas and I was wondering if I had a leak somewhere. It doesn't seem to affect the performance of the car otherwise. Let us know if you find anything else out about it.
Hi. I have a 2002 Kia Sportage 2WD. The seal on the shift mechanism going into the transmission case started to leak, so I need to replace the seal. First, do you need to disassemble the transmission or is there another way to get to the seal? Secondly, if I do need to dissassemble the transmission, how do I remove the transmission casing? I've tried everything and can't get into it. ... Read More
I have a 2002 Kia Sportage. I have been smelling a fuel smell intermittently. It seems to smell briefly for a few minutes then goes away. It happens fairly often. It also seems to be using more gas than I would expect. I thought it was just running a little rich then I read all of the blogs on the gas tank leaking being a major issue with this model during ... I had a similar problem and after 3 weeks of troubleshooting, it turned out to be the fuel pump relay. It is located on the passenger side inside the engine compartment in the fuse box. Hope this helps.
Today on Briley Parkway, the kia's engine died. Came to a complete stop on the off-ramp. I opened the hood, checked the oil. Its good, not low, Checked the resivor for the radiator, it was full, opened the radiator cap ( after it kinda cooled down ) All belts are on, can't see the timing belt cause its covered. One thing I did notice before it died. I had steam coming ... Read More
I had my 2002 serviced and they replaced the fan just prior to it melting as well. They will replace it for you also, since it was on the RECALL list. Check with your local dealer.
Since Oct of 2008 I have been trying to solve this problem. A buzzing noise starts in the area of the transmission and starts surging while decelerating or accelerating. If I do nothing it will eventually die but has always started up again. I have had the engine and transmission computer changed out. Still did it. Replace the switch relay. Same thing. Anyone had a similar experience and how did you ... Read More

While driving the sportage it lost power then came back on for a few second and lost it again. Now it does not start.Engine will not turn over. Battery is good LIghts work. Fuel pump was changed ,still will not run.
Tim, Did you get this resolved? What worked? I have the exact same problem. 2002 Kia Sportage rear driver's side electric window will go down with either driver's or pasenger's switch. However, it will not go up. Thanks, Gary
My fuel tank is leaking on my 2000 Kia Sportage. I printed out the Service Campaign 1996-2002 Sportage Fuel Tank Inspection .PDF and took it to both my local dealers. Niether dealer wanted to touch the tank or honor the NHTSA inspection. I read on the 'Vehicles Affected' column that it's 1996-2002 MY Sportage Models. Are those special models? How do you tell if you have a Sportage AL or KM? ... Read More
If it runs fine after the belt broke, the damage is most likely minimal. the Kia has an interference engine. lubrication would or should not be a problem for as short as the engine would be running when the belt fails. the best way to figure out damage internally w/o an overhaul is an oil analyis.
I have a 2002 kia sportage. I has been running rough so, I changed the plugs, wires and the fuel filter. While I was working on it I noticed a vacuume line missing from the intake manifold. I did my research and found the Sportage to be the best bang for my buck. One test drive and I was hooked! Traded in my 2002 Mazda Tribute, which I loved - but with 85,000 miles, I decided to retire her. You can't beat the warranty Kia offers, 10 years, 100,000 miles. Would like to hear from anyone out there who's put some miles on the 08. What, if any, ... Read More

I have a 2002 Kia Sportage and my engine light has been on for about 3 years. I had it checked, but it just keeps coming on so I ignore it. Haven't noticed any problems. And after reading here, I'm thinking it's a Kia glitch. So I will continue to ignore it till my Kia gives me a reason not to.
Here This is in engine compartment, bolted on right hand frame low below battery (if you have battery on right hand side, of course; right hand drive models have battery on the left) I have checked mine for a better idea.. Hello I have a 2002 Kia Sportage that a new battery will go dead in 24 hours. If I remove the FUEL PUMP RELAY or take the INJ FUSE out, then the battery will stay up to normal power. Any ideas? Thanks, Joe
Hi there, I know how frustrating working on KIA's can be. They are rather difficult to work on. Just in case you haven't tried already, have you contacted KIA directly for help? I know the dealerships want to charge and arm and a leg, so you might want to try KIA directly. Also, craigslist has been informative for me. I don't know how much luck you will have with your situation, ... Read More
There is no neutral opinion about this Sportage: one loves it, the other hates it. Front vacuum hubs were a problem at least until 2000..I read new seals were used in 2001-2002 that made them more reliable..but hubs are easily replaced with other type, and anyway, it does not stop you from driving 2WD ...and the price you have allows for 200-300$ if a swap proves necessary. Car..well..it is more a ... Read More

Thank you. I will follow your advice & check the head gasket. The selling price will probably be $5000. I will most likely install manual hubs. Got a lot of good info just reading the posts in this forum. You're right....it is fun to drive. My wife even liked driving it & she hasn't driven a manual in 25 yrs.
Depends on price. ALthough head gaskets failure is not a common issue with that engine, some cases are reported and what you mentioned trigs my caution.....At least, I'd fill the radiator to the rim when cold, leave cap off then run the engine and look for bubbles coming out the rad ..some lost "air" bubbles might escape at first...but if a continuous supply of bubbles come, that means exhaust invasion and ... Does anyone know what the steps are for changing the spark plugs on a 1998-2002 Sportage 4 cylinder DOHC? or have a link to where I dan find the process (DON'T say www.kia.com)? I spent hours looking through tech pages on Kia's website and found nothing.
2002 Kia Sportage - I have over 200,000 Km on mine. I've been throught a lot of problems since my vacuum went on my 4 wheel drive. I too had the hubs flipped. Then a vibration started. I don't know why either. CR seems to get a bug in their butt about certain vehicles that continues for years. The Sportage is essentially the same as the Hyundai Tucson which is "recommended". Aside from a few sheet metal and interior tweaks they are the same vehicle. The Hyundai salesman even told us when we were comparing the two that if he were shopping for this car he would buy ... Hi! Just had a similair problem. I have a 2000 Sportage. In the past 2 months i had to have them replace the spark pulled. What we really need to do, is send a barrage of letters, phone calls, & e-mails to Kia, & Hyundai, to get on the stick, and fix this widely known major problem! That they refuse to acknowledge! Kia promised a Sportage after a one year hiatus. Then again, if you still want a sportage, my local dealer still has three left from 2002. My Saturn dealer has a left over 2002 Saturn SL.
The new Double-Seal Hubs for 2001-2002 had fixed that problem. I pass by the local Kia dealer very often, and I don't see many '01 Sportages up for repair very often. I have heard stories about '98-'00 Sportages getting the new hubs...so, anyone who has hub problems might want to give this a try.
