    I went through that whole smelling gas thing before... I have replaced just about every component in this thing, over the last year. I have NO IDEA what it is. There's no gas smell this time.     Do you smell gas? If so, it may be a clamp that needs tightening. That's all that was wrong with mine when the check engine light was on.

    Have a problem with 2002 sportage. when driving and release gas peddle and step on clutch engine revs up instead of idleing down. Have found that if a/c or defrost is tuned off dont experience problem. Any ideas?

    I also have a 2002 Kia Sportage with the same fumes. It happens intermittently. I haven't had it fixed, but my vehicle seems to be using a lot of gas and I was wondering if I had a leak somewhere. It doesn't seem to affect the performance of the car otherwise. Let us know if you find anything else out about it.

    I had a similar problem and after 3 weeks of troubleshooting, it turned out to be the fuel pump relay. It is located on the passenger side inside the engine compartment in the fuse box. Hope this helps.

    I had my 2002 serviced and they replaced the fan just prior to it melting as well. They will replace it for you also, since it was on the RECALL list. Check with your local dealer.

    While driving the sportage it lost power then came back on for a few second and lost it again. Now it does not start.Engine will not turn over. Battery is good LIghts work. Fuel pump was changed ,still will not run.

    If it runs fine after the belt broke, the damage is most likely minimal. the Kia has an interference engine. lubrication would or should not be a problem for as short as the engine would be running when the belt fails. the best way to figure out damage internally w/o an overhaul is an oil analyis.

    I have a 2002 Kia Sportage and my engine light has been on for about 3 years. I had it checked, but it just keeps coming on so I ignore it. Haven't noticed any problems. And after reading here, I'm thinking it's a Kia glitch. So I will continue to ignore it till my Kia gives me a reason not to.

    There is no neutral opinion about this Sportage: one loves it, the other hates it. Front vacuum hubs were a problem at least until 2000..I read new seals were used in 2001-2002 that made them more reliable..but hubs are easily replaced with other type, and anyway, it does not stop you from driving 2WD ...and the price you have allows for 200-300$ if a swap proves necessary.     Thank you. I will follow your advice & check the head gasket. The selling price will probably be $5000. I will most likely install manual hubs. Got a lot of good info just reading the posts in this forum. You're right....it is fun to drive. My wife even liked driving it & she hasn't driven a manual in 25 yrs.

    The new Double-Seal Hubs for 2001-2002 had fixed that problem. I pass by the local Kia dealer very often, and I don't see many '01 Sportages up for repair very often. I have heard stories about '98-'00 Sportages getting the new hubs...so, anyone who has hub problems might want to give this a try.
