Hi...I'm in the market to replace our 2009 Camry and considering both Sonata and Optima. I have to admit, at first glance, I much prefer the look of the Optima. Question Though...In researching, I came across a page on the Car & Driver website that discussed a "discrepancy" between the performance (0-60 times) of the Sonata 2.0T vs the Optima 2.0T...they tested the Optima and got around 7.5 seconds. They went ... Read More
I own a 2009 Kia Optima SX, and the sun visors drive me up the wall! They are cheap vinyl covered things with sharp edges and no pull out extensions. Does anyone know if there is a different visor that will fit my car? I would love something that has an extension, and possibly cloth? I thought maybe something from a Sonata would fit... Thanks.
Ohhh, don't get me started. I bought my 2009 Kia Optima LX brand new. The dealer pressured me into buying this POS car. I've spoken to lawyers about lemon law rights, and even considered having my finance company repo the POS just to get rid of it. The day I bought it, I noticed how bad it drove. I've kept track of my mileage since day 1 and I average city/hwy ... Read More
I recently got a 2009 Optima, 2.4L Auto. I used my CarMD on it and got a stored code of P0171 which does NOT exist in this engine according to Leith Kia. So much for CarMD. The problem is that I am getting around 20mpg on combined city/highway driving. Most of the mileage is on the Interstate for about 70 miles round trip 2X a week, max speed of 75. Kia ... Read More
We just bought a 2009 Optima LX in Cash for Clunkers,,no special features I think its the most basic model - we paid $11,500. after the KIA rebate, the competitor rebate for our VM passat (both these rebates totalled $3500) , and the $3,500 we got for the Cash for Clunkers. I always think to myself I could have gotten a "better deal",,if I had held on a little longer. The ... Read More

If the lights work anything like Hyundais with auto-off lights, the parking lights don't go off until you remove the key AND open the door. I found the manual driver's seat on the Optima OK, but I know what you are saying about the tipping forward. Many cars with the single-lever height adjuster do that. That's why I always liked the cars (including some Kias and Hyundais) with dual manual height ... Read More
I don't know what to believe anymore... Please tell me that Autoweek got the dates wrong for the Optima. If you read the article, it says that the Optima is out "next year", and then the Hybrid out "1st quarter of 2011". Aren't they really the same timeframe? This is contrary to what Kia has "officially" put on their website. Also the Sportage 2.0T date could be wrong as well...this article ... Read More
We're looking betwen a KIA optima and a Hyundia Sonata. How much should a 2009 KIA optima be? Edmunds post $17,500 but most dealers post about $21,500 - what' that 4k difference? Any KIA rebates that anyone knows about coming soon - we're looking topurchase by last of JLy 1st wk or two of August
One of the Kia dealerships in my area still has a bunch of brand new 2009 Optimas! How much did your 2010 LX w/Convenience package go for, if I may ask? How do you like your car thus far?
Lost my 2004 EX Now have a new Kia 2009 LX anything I should know? :) :)
this news about the new 2011 Kia K5 (Optima's name in SK) outselling Sonata is groundbreaking and really quite refreshing. It is more success coming from new Design Chief Peter Schreyer of Kia (formerly the Design Chief of Audi Motors). You'll see Audi cues on new Kia's, but mostly on the new Kia SUV's. The new 2011 Kia Optima will face very stiff competition, but backy is right, all the hullabulloo ... Read More
I find the Sonata to be more... i'm going to use the word feminine... curvy, modern. I've liked them in pictures and seeing them on the road. They definitely catch my eye. The Optima (in images) looks a bit more masculine to me. Not quite hard edges but less swoopy. More aggressive. More like an old mustang as opposed to a corvette. (maybe that's a bad analogy) Specifically from a profile ... Read More

Thanks, Backy & Mickeyrom for the helpful advice. The local Kia dealer usually has a lot of '08/'09/'10 Optimas. They buy at auctions and from other dealers to keep their huge dealership stocked with late model Kia's and other makes. It's hard to know where the car's been purchased as they don't offer Carfax. They use another service called, I think 'CarReports'. I do know that some with high miles were ... Read More
Actually, one of the problems was I could NOT read your entire message at the time I replied because of the large photo that was posted above it. But I am surprised that Hyundai/Kia developed two different 5-speed ATs for use in the 2009-10 Optima and Sonata I4s, considering they used the same engine. 2005 was the last twin year for the Optima/Sonata I think, with the 2006 Optima using the ... All the really negative comments are puzzling. Seems to be many cars with multiple transmission failures, head gasket failures, starter failures, etc. But some comments are really strange. Like the one about the owner who had lots of problems starting at 42k miles, so he sold it, and "a month later" the new owner said he'd had lots of "insanely expensive problems" with the car. Which means either that new owner ... Read More

Have you tried the new KIA compact,I forget it's name.It probably averages 28 or better.Unfortunately since it's a new model, they probably aren't being discounted much.
Caravan 3.3 engine - just qualifies with 18 mpg average. I'll need 28 mpg to get the full $4500, not the case with the Optima.
What are you trading in that you're getting only $3500?
HI. I have driven the LX listed at $19,720. The salesman says he can only give me $7000 off ($2500 Kia cash, $1000 comp bonus for owning a Camry and $3500 cash for clunkers). Further proof that both Hyundai and Kia need to focus on dealer quality. I bought an Optima because in my case (at least) Kia has the better, less pushy, dealership. In your case, however, the dealer was obviously trying to pull a fast one.
No, you didn't miss something.. obviously the dealer HOPED you'd miss something. ;)
Got it last week for $17650. It was funny when the dealer tried to sneak in the destination fee of $675 into the final bill of sale ON TOP of the sale price. This fee was withdrawn after I threatened to leave. Do I miss something here? I was pretty sure that the final dealer's final sticker/sale price does include destination, and only TTL is extra.
I said the Camry is better than the Accord not just based on CR reports but on lots of other things-- comfort, ride, noise, smooth including reliability. Funny thing is CR does not share your view on the ranking of the Camry with regard to other factors. In their most recent ranking (Jan 2009), Camry is in a 6th place tie with Sonata amongst sedans priced at $20-25,000, here is their order: 1 Nissan ... Read More
Kias have improved a lot in reliability over the past few years. One data point on the Optima is that Consumer Reports has the 2009 Optima as "Much better than average" (its top mark) in predicted reliability, based on the 2006.5-8 Optimas. It rates the 2006.5 as "above average" and 2007 as "much better than average". It didn't report on the 2008 model in its April auto issue because of insufficient ... Read More

Well, comparing the Sonata's interior to that of the Optima, I could see how the Optima would pale in comparison, as the Sonata's dash in particular looks a lot more modern than the Optima's, IMO. But overall the Optima's interior seemed well-finished to me, if a bit dated in the dash design. For example, I like the cloth on the Optima much better than that in the Sonata--unless Kia changed the ... Read More

You bought a Kia, and you are worried about resale? The sad fact is, Kias in general depreciate pretty rapidly, and unless an Optima has the safety gear that has become commonplace in the mid-sized class now--and standard on the 2009 Optima--namely ABS, traction control, and ESC, it will be hard for them to hold value. Fortunately, there have been great deals on the 06.5+ Optima almost since it arrived, although ... Read More

Good news, the 2009 Optima gets ABS, ESC, and traction control standard across the board, joining the Accord, Mazda6, Passat, and Sonata (and Legacy?) as "true" mid-sizers with ESC on every trim. That takes care of the one glaring deficiency of the Optima, and the new-for-2009 175 hp I4 (shared with the Sonata) doesn't hurt either. Still has a pretty wimpy V6 for the class though (albeit with a little more ... Read More
I went to the site and noticed one really BIG thing on the Build and Price section: it appears ESC is now standard on every trim level, including the base LX 5MT!!! I would think they would have made a bigger deal out of it, since not that many mid-sized sedans ... Read More
Go to the 2009 Optima threads to see the new car. I agree with Backy in preferring the looks of the old car, although that is strictly from pictures. New car has Fordish front clip with rear changed to better match the new Spectra replacement.
Just look at the Carmax site, they are selling a 2007 Mazda6 I Sport, (not VE) with 20k for $17.7 stock #: 5366031 Rebates might effect resale value, but those rebates might be gone next year. i.e. don't think the 2009 will have a rebate. Not every one is hanging out at these forums looking at prices paid Even Mickeyrom admitted he might have paid too much for his Optima.
Hertz is like carmax, their web site says: With our low fixed prices you have the advantage. Which rebates do you qualify for? If it's just the $2500 general rebate, the deal is about at invoice--good but not great for a car like the Optima, especially with the refreshed 2009 models on the way. If you qualify for additional rebates, then I don't think it's a very good deal.
Looking at it from an outsider's viewpoint, MT recently reviewed 10 cars in this class and ranked the Optima 6th overall. A decent showing for a car that is (incredibly) one of the oldest designs in the class now. It was topped by the Passat (which costs a LOT more and has a lot more power), the 2009 Sonata SE (which benefits from mid-gen improvements, many of which the Optima receives ... Read More

Could we please change the title of this discussion? Since the 2006.5-2008 Optimas are the same, how about "Kia Optima 2006.5-2008"? There's already a discussion for the refreshed 2009 Optima, and one for the pre-2006.5 Optima, so that would give us continuous coverage for all years of the Optima. Right now there's a little gap--no general discussion for the 2006.5 or 2008 Optimas. Thanks!
Now that Honda has pretty much eliminated the 2009 Fit from my fall car shopping list (by making VSC available only on the most loaded Sport + Nav trim, which I figure with AT will go for somewhere close to $19k), I am refocusing on other cars. Yes, especially for 2009, with the I4 being bumped to 175 hp, in a lighter car, and with better fuel economy. I just wonder how many V6s Kia will sell when the 2009s roll out.
http://www.topspeed.com/cars/kia/2009-kia-optima-ar54307/picture239225-0.html I liked the large clear taillights and the flat instrumentation. Stability package is still optional. The front looks like the late, unlamented Ford Five Hundred, the tail like the last-gen Accord.
yep...especially since I think Sonatas do have them as standard.
Plus ESC (and therefore ABS) is mandated by 2011 anyway, so why not get ahead of the curve along with Sonata, Accord etc. and make ESC standard for the 2009 refresh? If it can be standard on cars like the Sportage, why not the 2009 Optima?
I think ESC/ABS should be standard. If they had the volume, they could just raise the price by a couple of hundred and not lose anything of their profit.Safety should be the #1 concern.
Word is out that the Optima will get a significant make-over for 2009, including powertrain upgrades and styling tweaks. Let's talk about it and share what you know about it! I think the 2006.5-2008 Optima is a solid offering in the mid-sized class, with just the right blend of room, ride comfort, handling, size, and tasteful styling inside and out. And the price is right. Only two things I don't like: ... Read More

I think there is a resemblance between the front of the 1998 Accord and the current Sonata. I also think that resemblance is coincidental.
