As a former Camry and present Accord owner (only used as an infrequently driven 2nd car) I totally agree with Plekto. The Japanese designers played it safe and designed white bread sedans since 2002. So, in 2004, after realizing that a fully loaded Toyota Camry would require a kidney donation, I switched out and purchased a new 2004 Optima EX V6. There's not that many options here: 1) You are buying the car from a Kia dealer. You get them to state, in writing, that the car is covered by the remainder of the 5/60k factory warranty. After that, it's up to you to maintain the car according to the manufacturer's recommended service schedule. 2) The owner had the car serviced at a Kia or other service center that maintains computer records. ... The 2006.5 is the 2007,but the 2008 is slightly different.I think only that the EX lost the cassette deck. However, all are pretty much the same car with the same issues and same power train so why not consolidate.I'm all for it.BTW has anyone looked up KIA Optima on youtube? There is one guy who really...really loves his KIA.Others ...not so much...

Word is out that the Optima will get a significant make-over for 2009, including powertrain upgrades and styling tweaks. Let's talk about it and share what you know about it! I think the 2006.5-2008 Optima is a solid offering in the mid-sized class, with just the right blend of room, ride comfort, handling, size, and tasteful styling inside and out. And the price is right. Only two things I don't like: ... Read More

ESC and ABS are nice safety additions, but, are they totally and really necessary? I am not sold that they are. What's wrong with careful and steady and intelligent driving? The Hyundai Sonata was being put down by several people early on(the newly re-designed Sonata built in Alabama I'm talking about here)for having a front seat that bent down too much at the front, resulting in an uncomfortable sitting position. The advantage the Fit has over the Elantra for safety is that at least we know the IIHS side crash test result on the Fit--"Good". We don't know on the Elantra. The rear IIHS test wasn't very good on the Fit however--I expect that will improve with the new design this year. And the Elantra SE has the standard ESC, vs. none on the Fit. Back to the Optima though... it ... Read More

So, no change in options packages, e.g. you still need to buy the "appearance pacakge" to get ABS and ESC on the LX? Bummer. I wish Kia would get with the program and offer both features standard, or at the least easily-available options. :(

Question is, how long can Toyota grow and prosper on reputation alone? How long before the masses notice the change? Try "now." A cousin of mine is going to buy a mid-sized sedan before the end of the year. He didn't even consider the Camry seriously based on what he's heard about quality and how it drives. He's narrowed it down to the Accord LX and Sonata GLS or SE (I4 ... Read More

Today, it is safe to say, the Camcords are the benchmarks in the mid-size market but the competition is keen and getting more so. I don't know that it is safe to say that anymore, at least in terms of professional opinion. Three examples: 1) In C/D's last comparo of mid-sized sedans, three cars outscored the new Camry: the prior-gen Accord, the new Altima, and the Optima. That the new Camry ... Read More

I think there is a resemblance between the front of the 1998 Accord and the current Sonata. I also think that resemblance is coincidental. The grille and headlamps on the 1998 Accord are very generic, and there's similar shapes on many other cars. We already know what car the next Sonata (2009 MY refresh) has in its sights: the Hyundai Genesis. If you believe that Hyundai intentionally copied the 1998 Accord ... Read More

I see a lot of resemblance to the Optima, except the taillights, which do look to me like (truncated) Sonata or Lexus lamps. Since Honda obviously did not set out to mimic a Kia, it just shows once again that there are only so many wants to bend sheet metal on a sedan.

Let me clarify what I said earlier: these incentives and deals on the Accord didn't just start appearing in the past few months, on 5-year-old Accords (design-wise). They have been around for about 2 years. Coinciding with the arrival of the '06 Sonata, the first truly competitive mid-sized offering from Hyundai. I don't think it was a coincidence. I mean, if cars can have 260+ horsepower and have 2008 revised fuel economy estimates in the mid 20s combined like the Camry does, where is the problem? The "2006.5" Optima was essentially an early intro 2007 and will be a carry-over at least through the 2007 model year - likely through the 2008 model year, too. Automobile rebates are a marketing tool to move slow selling cars with the unintended consequence of coincidentally reducing later trade-in value.* If KIA division of corporate parent Hyundai gets the directive to offer rebates, it'll happen. Otherwise it won't. *The real losers ... Read More
