I have a 2006 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 automatic with just over 20,000 miles. Sitting at work and cranked fine, only to find out it won't go into gear. Never been in the mud or in deep water. Sits in a garage and is driven for pleasure only. Any suggestions of what to check first ?
Thanks Vikings0101!!!!...I have a 2006 jeep wrangler that I bought 6 months ago. I purchased the vehicle from a Chrysler Jeep dealer. The fully stock vehicle had 25,577 miles on it. The " DW " symptoms started happening about two months ago. Very frustrating. Can't drive it on the highway. More frustrating is researching the problem. No one really knows what the real problem is. I called the dealer where I ... Read More

Hey. I have the opportunity to buy a very low mileage (less than 20k) 2006 Wrangler X. It is in excellent condition with no modifications. The owner has never experienced the death wobble, however, after reading all of the articles, I'm a bit concerned. Has Chrysler/Jeep accepted responsibility for the problem? Seems to be a common problem on Wranglers. I have a 2006 and it started doing it in 2010. Just have to listen carefully and stop just before it's full. Maybe our Jeeps are just spitting out that overpriced gas as a protest?

Before you sell your Wrangler, consider this. The problem may not be the suspension at all. Tires on newer vehicles, Jeeps are no exception, have been bubble balanced at the factory so if you drive a new one the wheels will be balanced-sort of. But bubble balancing won't do as the tires begin to wear after 2K to 3K. The tires need to be balanced on a friction surface (what Goodyear ... Read More

I bought my new and I think it is an instant classic because it is the last year of the old style Jeeps...especially the Engine. As most know the new Jeeps have the Van engine. I plan on keeping mine a long time. I only have 23,000 mi. on it. Glad I bought mine before the change.
You may want to check that the front wheel bearings are not loose. I had a chev 4x4 that would shimmy really bad when you are going just at the right speed and hit a bump or dip in the road. My 09 Jeep so far has no problem with this as of yet.
The brakes on mine squeak sometimes if I let is sit more than 24 hours, but they have always done that since I bought the Jeep new. (2006 Jeep Wrangler X 6 cyl.) This should be something that they fix at NO cost, especially since my 3 year warranty is not up. I think I will contact someone in consumers affairs in my state of Ct. I would like to know how many others have this type of problem and why most vehicles do NOT have this problem. There has to be some kind of defect.
I have a 2006 Unlimited, and had the rotors go bad at 7,000mi. The dealer fixed them no charge (like I was going to pay), and now at 12,000mi they're going bad again. Unfortunately I'd be happy with your 16,000mi. :-(.
My car is at the dealers right now. They tell me my problem is severely warped rotors and metal to metal brakes. As I said in other posts the dealership replaced the rotors a couple of weeks after I bought it because they had a "bad batch." How could they go so quickly? Thanks, WD! I agree - the bounce issue would likely be a higher priority. tidester, host SUVs and Smart Shopper
tidester, I can't really say. The tires are 30" compared to the 28-1/2's that were on it new. I noticed the tendency to bounce right after I got them. I figured with bigger tires, I could get by with a little bigger foot print. It would soften the ride a little, not get me in trouble with wear, and would tend to reduce bounce. So, I really don't know how much ... Read More
I'm curious. Have you noticed any drop in gas mileage since you reduced your tire pressure? tidester, host SUVs and Smart Shopper
sky, I don't know how much air pressure you are running in your tires, but I solved a similar problem by reducing the air pressure from 35 psi to around 28 psi. I have slightly larger than stock tires. Since you drive only on good roads, the less pressure probably will not hurt handling and might help reduce the bounce. Let them down to 28 psi (use a good gauge) and ... Read More

I's start by checking the steering damper. A bad damper will allow your front tires to go into a wobble oscillation when prompted by a bump.
Would this be a warranty issue? It seems that Jeeps have a lot of problems that regular vehicles do not have. I am not mechanically inclined and have a bad hand so I cannot do any of the work myself. Thanks for your reply.
It kind of sounds like something in the steering geometry came loose. Perhaps check the tie rod ends, track bar ends (especially the axle end). As for the clicking noise, it could possibly be one of the u-joints that goes from the axle shaft to the hub that turns at either front wheel. Mine clicks too, but I have a front auto-locker that I installed a few years ago. -Paul
For obvious reasons I can only be very non-specific, but you would appear to have a front suspension component that can change position or orientation under a momentary load before returning to it's original configuration. It could be an upper or lower knuckle joint, maybe a softening control arm bushing, or possibly one of the many steering joints. As for the clicking, it's probably either the brakes or a dry 'U' ... I forgot to ask....is there a possibility that this could have been the cause of the water on the driver side floor?
I noticed that the knob that selects the direction of the heat may open vents. I make sure its all the way to the left now and will see if that was the cause of my water problem. When I turn it all the way to the left you an almost hear the vents closing. Who knows?
A couple of possibilities. 1. The condensate drain line from your air conditioner could be disconnected and dumping the water in the passenger floor. 2. Many of our beloved vehicles leak water through holes in the firewall when it is raining or when we wash them. Mine does this when it is parked headed uphill and I deal with it by parking headed downhill. As I understand it, you can remove ... Read More

The last two days it rained and I noticed water under my passenger side floor mat. I recently put my hard top back on but cannot find any places it could be leaking from. The sides are not wet...just under the floor mat. I know its just water by the lack of any oder. Any suggestions on where the water might be coming from? TIA
