Engine performance varies with choice, but the V8 and the 3.0-liter diesel are both commendable. Both are backed by well-geared transmissions. Steering feel isn't completely direct, but you want some isolation from kick-back in an off-roader. There is a bit of body roll, but this trade-off is necessary to get good off-road articulation in the rocks. And this one has good off-road performance. The low-range transfer case has a neutral position for 4-down flat towing behind a motorhome.
The ride is smooth and well damped. It doesn't bob and float as much as the Commander. The tires look aggressive, but they are relatively quiet. The cabin feels tight and solid. Seat comfort and driving position are good, but tall drivers may wish the seat went down more than it does -- it's more of a visibility issue than a head-clearance issue.
The Grand Cherokee presents a mixed bag. Tall drivers will feel cramped by the low roofline and the laid-back windshield. Visibility isn't outstanding either upward or through the wide A-pillars. Front-seat leg- and knee room are good, but the rear is tight if everyone is 6 feet tall or more. Cargo space is average. Interior space is good up front but lacking in the rear seat. The rear cupholder is flimsy. The climate controls are easy to use, but the audio system is bothersome to operate with the touchscreen layout. There are excellent steering wheel controls and adjustable pedals.
The exterior design is pure Jeep, but panel gaps and paint smoothness are not stellar. The interior is largely pleasant and most of the interior materials and color choices work well, but there are too many cheap-looking chrome baubles in the interior.
Off-Road Ready
This Jeep (with the exception of the pavement-only SRT-8) has the typical off-road capability and features people expect from Jeep.
Towing Capable
With the V8 or the 3.0-liter diesel, the GC is a capable towing machine. The low limit isn't particularly high, but it does well within its rating.
Cargo Hauler
Cargo space isn't over-large with this SUV, but you can haul a decent amount, especially when two or three are on board.
