EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

All-new for 2007, the Jeep Compass is a comfortable compact SUV. Too bad it's short on power.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

The CVT seems to sap power from the lazy four-cylinder. Steering is well-weighted with average response and feel.

Comfort

RATING

Ride quality is just firm enough to feel sporty without being uncomfortable. Seats are unquestionably comfortable.

Function

RATING

The climate controls are operated by three big knobs, simple and functional. Thick A-pillars and oversized rear-seat headrests block more of the driver's view than they should. The cargo area is small for an SUV, measuring just 22.7 cubic feet. It's smaller than the competition even with its rear seat folded flat.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

Exterior is not the most inspired design, but it's inoffensive and functional. Inside is an endless sea of hard plastics.

DETAILED PROFILE:

Comfortable Comfortable seating in all positions.

Off-Road Ready The least off-road capable of the Jeep models.

Cargo Hauler Smallish cargo area for its class.
