Review of the 2001 Jeep Cherokee

  • Long overdue for an overhaul, the Cherokee hangs on for one more year before next year's replacement, the Liberty, debuts.

  • Safety
  • Pros

Powerful engine, affordable, extremely capable off-road.

  • Cons

Boxy styling, small rear seat, difficult entry/exit.

  • What's New for 2001

With the redesigned Jeep Cherokee's debut pushed back until the summer of 2001 as a 2002 model, the current model will remain in place for the 2001 model year with minor changes. The 4.0-liter PowerTech inline-six engine is standard equipment in all 2001 Cherokees, with the 2.5-liter inline four, along with the SE trim, dropped. The previous Limited trim is also dropped, with the former Classic trim now labeled Limited. All 2001 Cherokees offer child seat tethers as standard equipment.

Vehicle: 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2WD 2dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 5M)

I bought the 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport because we needed to replace a 2nd car and it was a good deal. The plan was for me to drive it to work and back 5 miles one way. I LOVE IT!! Couldn't be happier! Fun to drive, very reliable, just right! We'll keep the Jeep forever.

The real thang

Vehicle: 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2WD 2dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 5M)

This vehicle is the best I have ever owned. It's a kick to drive, has a classic, handsome style that stands out more as new models of SUVs get weirder and weirder. I wish I had waited for a 4X4, but my wife had to have our gunmetal blue Cherokee. Backseat passengers tend to complain on long trips, but hey, it's not about them is it? We put an awesome sound system in it, and use Mobil One synthetics in the oil, tranny and differential. We change oil every 3,000, and the boy runs like the day we drove it off the lot (now at 102,000). So far, it has been Uber Reliable. This weekend I fixed the problem with the oxidation of the exterior plastic trim. We plan to keep this one forever.
