i am buying a 1990 jeep cherokee loredo and it needs an engine. i found an engine and tranny but some transmissions wont fit in certain jeep. i can getand engine and tranny out of a 93 jeep cherokee and mine is a 90 jeep cherokee loredo. will it work.
Check harmonic balancer if your belt flew off - they're notorious for flying off kilter when the rubber inner 'liner' rots away. After that - check the water pump shaft for wobble along with the other pulleys & idler (if present). CKS (crankshaft position sensor) isn't too bad to change once you've done it... first one I did, I supported the tranny crossmember w/ a floor jack & lowered the transmission ... Read More
I had a similar stalling problem with my Jeep. It did turn out to be the sensor. The symptoms of the problem were pretty clear: 1. The Jeep would run for 5 minutes and just STOP DEAD (no sputtering, just an ignition cutoff); 2. The Jeep would not turn over for several hours, but eventually did. Assuming that the problem was related to a charge buildup on the engine block (which ... Read More
Need help real fast, I changed the serpentine belt because the old one came off. It didn't break and just came off! After changing it now the stupid jeep starts up but after 5 minutes it stalls and is hard to keep running! 1990 Cherokee Classic, 125,000 miles, and when starting, it turns over excessively before finally starting, probably about 5-10 seconds. It doesn't require any mashing of the throttle or anything, it just turns over for a while and then kicks on just as it should, and idles perfectly fine. It does this even right after shutting it off, which I think is weird. The plugs, wires, and I'm pretty sure distributor are ... Read More

Spot on.. I actually replaced my fuel pump assembly and a fresh fuel filter this last weekend. I noticed that I had no pressure at my test port on the fuel rail after an attempt to start. Fuel pressure was a little over 15 lbs with ignition on and was suffering from pretty bad leak down, losing pressure fast. Now it starts within 2 seconds of cranking and has plenty of ... Read More
What's your fuel pressure? TPS voltages check out across the sweep range? (A Digital volt meter might miss any dead spots -heck an analog might miss a dead spot too but an old school volt meter with a needle will catch a dead spot easier.)
Update: Replaced CPS, plugs and wires, double-checked plug gaps. Removed/cleaned the idle step sensor. Runs a bit smoother now. It will put to the local convenience store, however, still gets bogged down if given too much gas while in gear. In park or neutral, runs fine, no obvious misfires. I've checked vacuum levels at the EGR solenoid and it was around 15hg and did a manual test on the EGR valve. ... Read More
1990 Jeep Cherokee: Takes up to 30 seconds of cranking to start. Once started, will idle a little rough but straightens out with some revs. Has been hard to start for a while but recently degraded to the point of no road time. I have a 1990 cherokee that will start, but as soon as you let off of the key it will die. There is a new fuel pump and filter on. Put a new ignition switch in today and it still has the same problem. If I bump the start as it dies, sometimes it will stay running. Any help would be greatly appreaciated
I have a 93 cherokee it only starts if I leave the key on for a few minutes, something clicks then I turn key all the way it starts most of the time . I hav'nt found the problem yet though.
Find a Dual Battery System, and a high amp alternator. The 98 G Cherokee's have a bolt on 130 amp alternator so you can run off road lights at night, other power tools off an inverter, and your winch without running out of juice, or winch across creeks without running the engine. Then go with 4:10 gears in the differentials so you can turn larger tires, 2" lift = 31" tires, ... Read More
Erratic shifting in my 1990 Laredo was the EGR valve: more specifically, the EGR back-pressure transducer, which I think is only used in 89-90. It's attached to the EGR valve when you buy one, and it won't let a vacuum to the EGR valve unless there is sufficient exhaust back-pressure. The diaphragm in mine was worn out, but not completely shot, causing the EGR valve to flutter rapidly, and somehow causing ... Read More
There are several possibilities but let's hit the easy ones first: All are common issues & you may have a combo of them. Throttle Position Sensor, located on throttle body. Sends signal to ECU (computer) to control fuel injection, some tranny input. Relatively easy to replace and adjust but requires a $5 digital volt meter from Harbor Freight, etc to set the voltages correctly. (This is likely causing the wierd shifting ... Read More

Is it injected or carburated??? If it's injected, I'd look at the Idle Air Control valve, it's mounted on the side of the throttle body. Once it is disconnected, very slowly try to bring the engine back down ... Read More

Remove the idle air control sensor, and clean the tip of it, and clean the inside where it came from on the throttle body. Varnish and such makes this sensor stick, and gives the ecm a faulty reading, resulting in stalls. hope this helps you. P.S you may have to replace the idle air control sensor. good luck m8.
I have a 1988 Jeep Cherokee that does that too! Seems the idle is not high enough. I have been told that the idle adjusts automatically, can't set it like other cars.I know I need an accelerator/throttle cable, and hope when that is replaced it will fix the problem. I have a 1990 jeep cherokee that will completly die when I come to a complete stop at a light. When it dies I can then just start it right back up in neutral. RE the turn signal: If the prop is they are not canceling after a turn, you need to pull off the steering wheel to get at the canceling springs. If you have a Chiltons, etc. the procedure should be covered. You'll need a puller. Take care to remember how the horn parts go back in (make a sketch, take a photo, number them, etc.). Yes you are correct, but eventually the thermostat will open the whole way and you will notice coolant coming from the return line. Your first post said " when I drive slowly" not when you shut it off. Radiator caps are set to release at a specified pressure. Make sure yours is the correct one for your Jeep and that it releases at the pressure it is supposed to release at (have it tested). If you have too much coolant in your radiator that can cause it to release after you shut it off. ... Read More
