I have just bought a 1998 Vanden Plas with 98K miles. I noticed the "transmission fault light" came on as I pulled up at home. I am not quite sure how to deal with this as I do not have any prior experience with Jags. One thing is obvious - I need to get to a mechanic. Jaguar XJ-Series Starting/Stalling Issues

Wont start

Hello , I have a 1998 XJ8 Jaguar , that was running fine . Drove it to work . Came out at night and now it will not crank at all . Lights come on and all test lights on dash , but no crank . It will not jump off either . The only think that I have noticed different is there is now a flashing red light , right next to the park position on the transmission sellection . Any Ideas? I have a 1998 XJ8L and love the way it looks - I just wish I could drive it. It won't start. My mechanic (not a Jag expert, but honest and good with cars generally) has been trying to figure it out, and is close to concluding the GEM module needs to be replaced at a Jaguar dealer, with a likely cost in the THOUSANDS of dollars. Just been reading Sep 08 issue of Jaguar World and it has an article about changing the timing chain tensioners. Any 4.0 AJ-V8 built before 21st Oct '98 will have a plastic bodied TCT which fails and causes catastrophic engine damage the valves and pistons unite in unholy matrimony. I purchased a 1998 xj8 in like new condition, and after reading some of the problems such as the secondary timing tensioners I started calling the Jag.dealers ( I called two) one wanted $4500 if all needed replacement and $2500 if only the secondary tensioners needed replacement. Whether it is a good buy or not is in the eye of the beholder. I just purchased my third Jag. It is a 2002 Jaguar XJ Sport with 55,000 miles. I bought it for much less than $15,000. I purchased it to replace my 1998 Jaguar XJ8. When I bought it, it had 72,000 miles. It now has 203,000; uses no oil; and runs like a top. Now you know why I just purchased my third Jag. I purchased a second hand 1998 XJ8 Vanden Plais from Jaguar dealer in 2002-2003. It had 43,000 miles. We've spent over $15,000 on repairs. Transmission was redone, a/c and other major problems fixed. Now my car is in the shop. Check engine light came on before and never came back. Dealer said maybe crank shaft--cost anywhere between $2500 to $6000. I love my car. ... Read More...
