Jaguar XJL 2011 BLOWS Engine at 56K miles! RUN!

I must admit that this car is one of the sexiest and best looking vehicles I have ever owned. Unfortunately the historical mechanical issues that for years plagued Jaguar have not disappeared. I purchased this black beauty with just 10K miles in 2013 from a third party dealer that was selling it for his client. The previous owner was the wife of a CEO and hardly ever drove it. Here we are July of 2017 and at just 56K miles after driving it it from Miami beach to the Florida turnpike, a seven mile drive, the engine is now blown. No warning lights, just went into protective mode and by the time we pulled over the damage was done. Smoke everywhere and with the family in the car fortunately it did not catch fire as gas and oil leaked everywhere. Of course the car is out of warranty (ended Nov 2015) and after a very long process with Jaguar USA HQ executive escalations the best they could do is take 50% off the retail cost of the new engine. I spent over $18,000 to put a new engine on a luxury Jaguar that had just 56K miles on it. All service records were provided. It was maintained at the dealer, oil changes which are synthetic done yearly or every 10K miles. The only thing not done was the 5 year maintenance. The entire experience dealing with Jaguar USA was terrible. I felt like I was on trial with them trying to prove I was a negligent owner. In the end they decided on a "Goodwill" benefit of 50% discount of the retail cost of the new engine plus parts needed that were damaged. I still can not believe that Jaguar was unwilling to stand by their product and cover this issue. Especially considering that while the car was under warranty in 2014 a similar problem occurred and they repaired and took care of it at 0 cost. Those records were also provided though completely ignored. Their conclusion was based on that I was the third owner of the car and that the 5 year maintenance was not done. Completely unbelievable! In the end we all have to make our choices as consumers. I own an F150 which has a 130K miles and no issues, had a Benz 150K miles and no issues, currently own a Porsche 30K miles no issues as for Jaguar I will NEVER purchase another no matter how sexy they are! For those of you reading this post know that Jaguar USA is only interested in lining their pockets with 0 regards for their consumers especially if out of warranty. My recommendation is don't walk, Run!!!!

I have owned 4 Mercedes Benz's and 2 Lexus'. I owned two S500's ( an 01 and an 02), an 03 SL 500 and a '10 E350 that we recently purchased earlier this year. I still have my '02 S500 and I love that car. I purchased all my vehicles new. Prior to this new change, I wouldn't even look at a Jaguar. There was nothing exciting about the vehicle at all. ( The same way I feel about Lexus now. Its a safe boring car.) I had actually gone to the dealership to look at the Panamera when the salesman told me I should look at the new XJ. He walked me over there and I was done!!! This is the sexiest car ever built. Go ahead and spend more money if you wish, you will NOT get more car!!!

Imagine 5.0 L horse power meets practicality with seating for 5 comfortably. The good is stylish, fun and engaging drive. Not raw Dodge Viper power but certainly enough to know you are riding in a v8. The ride is not quite Bentley smooth, but very intuitive to the driving experience. It does not beat you up but you will also not get bored driving the car. That was the good. Now imagine breaking down on the side of the road with the engine dying and you coasting to a halt on the shoulder of the interstate at random points of your drive. Nobody knows what’s wrong and the car will not duplicate its problems with any type of consistency. You will drive the car for a month with zero issues and then out of the blue it will leave you stranded on the side of the road. I got rid of this car pretty quick. It is beautiful to look at and fun test drive. It is a nightmare to own.

The reviews that suggest problems are inconsistent with my own personal experience. My 2011 replaced a 2008 BMW 750Li, and I currently own the Jaguar and a Mercedes GLS. Hands down the Jaguar has provided the most rewarding ownership experience. Out-of-pocket expenses other than annual scheduled maintenance, a new set of tires and a replacement battery is approximately $350.00 for a locking motor. That's 8 1/2 years and 102,000 miles. Apart from its having a bit more road noise than the 2008 BMW and an infuriatingly large and heavy keyless entry/ignition fob (both resolved in later versions), this car has delivered more satisfaction than any other I have ever owned. I have been waiting for its replacement, only to find it's not going to be replaced as a gasoline powered vehicle. Because of that and only because of that I have ordered a 2020 BMW 750. The MPG rating below is based on my driving pattern, which is 70% highway driving.

We only have 3,000 miles on our SJL but, so far, we are really pleased. Performance is fine. Rear seat legroom is exceptional. With the exception of what appear to be overly wide gaps at fenders, hood, trunk lid, etc. the build quality seems excellent. Just a few minor niggles: The rear cup holders are positioned in a way that makes them virtually unusable. The wood grain on the front doors does not match that across the dash (under the windshield), there is no dead pedal and the electronic responses (start-stop button, for example) is way too slow. Ride is a little harsh. Standard radio is great! Both the transmission and engine are A-OK! And the value, overall, is outstanding.
