I have a 1995 XJ12 which I have had since '98. Over the past four years I have had it in the shop numerous times for transmission failure. Although the transmission is the original heavy duty (GM), the electronics are extensive, complicated and prone to periodic failure. Since Jag has changed hands twice since I bought the car and the company is now part of Tata motors of India I am ... Read More
The bulbs are cheap. You have to remove, gently layers of fascia to get to the bulbs. Its a good idea to replace them all while you are in there.
I have a 1995 XJ and it is perfect except for one item. The memory seats will not return when 1 and 2 buttons are pushed. The mirrors and steering will come to memory but the seat will not. but on exit and Auto mode the seats will go back and release. But the seats will not come back. Does anyone have a simple answer for fixing? Thank you
Is the brightness dependent on a dimmer or reostat that varies the volume of light illuminating the rest of the dash? If so, turn up the dash lights dimmer to it's brightest setting and see if it is connected to the clock.
Since you seem to know a lot, how easy is it to replace the bulbs that make the clock LED's work, as they are not readable at this point. I know I have a watch, but I'm on the go a lot and a working clock woutd be nice.
Happy to know you have it fixed. The XJ is an admired motor car. :)
Actually, you hit the nail on the head. It was a bad coil, which was causing a misfire. The shop replaced the coil and plugs, now no problem. Always take it to a Jaguar mechanic though, the first shop just took it for a test drive, then said the transmission was bad.
Engine missfire would relay the same symtoms. Age of wires and plugs?
My 1995 Jaguar XJ6 began having a transmission problem in the last few days. It feels like the transmission is slipping as the car feels like it's bucking a little or like the transmission is grabbing and then periodically letting go for a second. No lights have come on and the fluid is full. I live on a hill and once recently I had to pull the car out of park ... Read More
Hi, I have a 1995 XJR 4.0 ltr X300 series. For some time now it has had an intermittent clicking noise from what sounds like a relay on the left hand side of the consul. It seems to be speed related as it seemed to happen once the throttle got a bit stiffer. I lubricated the throttle control body & it still did it. Today it actually stopped totally after the ... Suggest you consider the Audi A8 also. I own several Jaguars and looked at the XJ-R a year ago when I bought my 2005 Audi. The Jag was very nice, but not different enough from my 1995 XJ-R to seem like a really new car. (Also, I thought Jaguar interior quality had declined a bit.) My only two complaints about the A8 are poor rear vision and it's not quite as ... Read More
Simply gorgeous !!! Whatever is the problem with Jaguar, LG ? This car looks so beautiful, so why is it not selling ? I think because it looks a lot like it did in 1995. Perhaps because people hated the "modern" '90-94 looks, they were scared to be too daring, and they ended up doing basically a nip\tuck to a 9-year-old car. Look at the S550 vs. the 500, or the ... As for the LS400 The 1990-1994 had a flair to me. I remember a line from a Car and Driver review of the 1995 that said it lacked the flair of the less perfect model. That car was too antiseptic to me. There are some posters on here which have commented about Lexus acknowledging that the revision was too conservative. The original model was a timeless design, a la Jaguar. Look ... Read More
I just wanted to chime in with my great experience with my '06 XJ Super V8. I am not a die hard Jaguar fan, have not dreamed about owning a Jag all my life. I did not intend to buy a Jaguar this time around. But having done so, I am really happy. Here is my story. I had owned a two Cadillac Eldorado STS from 1995 through 2000. I enjoyed ... Read More

Hi: I would steer clear of this year and this XJ series. Jag had just introduced this redesign a year or so earlier, and it had various problems, not to speak of the recent takeover at the time by Ford. (Does the '91 you're looking at still have mineral oil brakes? They fixed that problem after a year or so and returned to normal brake fluid.) They also had various engine ... Read More
I have driven a 2004 Jaguar XJR and loved it. It is NOT vulgar. I do find the new BMW 7 series to be vulgar when compared to the 1995-2001 7 series.
What happens when you see the new Bimmer 6 & 7-series, the Pontiac Aztek, the Buick Rendevouz, or Infiniti QX56 ?? Are you loving these designs ??? Now compare any of these to the LS400 styling....Which one is more timeless and graceful ? Yeah I see your point, the Aztek is just plain ugly as is the 7-Series. I differ on the 6-Series though. None of these designs are lovable either ... Read More
is past their glory days, as is just about every other car maker (except for perhaps Aston Martin). The new 1995-1997 Jaguar XJ is a reliable luxury car. The new XJ has also been much more reliable than the previous XJ while having more quality. That article I posted about Jaguar and aluminum pointed out that the HUGE investment for aluminum Jaguars is continuingly being developed. The next XK will use ... Read More
for a 16-year-old, try something that costs less. A 1995-1997 XJ6 is reliable and much more affordable.
The new aluminum XJ is all-Jaguar. British Leyland certainly didn't help Jaguar much in the 1970s and 1980s. They gave them the horrible reliability that they are known for to this day. Millions were invested in the 1995-1997 XJ and it is still a very reliable car. Jaguar's V-8 is an all-Jaguar V-8. The new 4.2 V-8 does not have the potential timing chain tensioner or nikasil problems of the 98-00 ... Read More
Having leased the 2004 VDP last week(Slate-Ivory),(my fourth Jaguar), I wanted to pass along some info. I had the 1993 XJ-6 but only for a year. Have (still) the 1995 VDP with many, many repairs. Never got stranded ,but did I pay the dealer serious cash over the years.(The price of luxury! I guess!). Last year we got the S-type(2003) which has great ride manners and refinement in the Jaguar tradition. ... Read More
This is amazing. (Last Post) "In your previous post the chart showed 700+ units and you said that was US sales???? I accept 1700+ for the SL500....Allante sold 6700 in 93." No chart or link I ever posted said anything like that. Period. It said (they MBUSA.COM) said 1721 sales for 1993. End of story. You said 700 or 800 in your confused state. The link didn't change from one posting ... Read More
I had been meaning to ask you what you thought of the facelifted 2005 XK cars? I really like what they've done to the lower body. I've seen a coupe in White and a convertible XKR this very rick looking Blue, absolutely stunning. No arguement about the interior, asthetically it was all Jaguar. The Germans then were just leather appointed board rooms in which to conduct the "business" of driving. I ... Read More
I bought my 1998 XJ8 (anthracite/black) two months ago with 50K on the clock. It's going in this week for an oil change with 54K miles, and highly enjoyable ones, too. I'll be using an honest and competent Jag specialty shop -- like most enthusiast owners I avoid the dealer service departments whenever possible. They're exorbitantly expensive for routine operations like oil changes, and prone to swapping components rather than repairing ... Read More
Hello all, I'm wondering if anyone has heard anything about the reliability reports of the New XJ. Has the new car been spared the gremlins of the X & S Type launches? To level with you all, I'm a Lexus owner in denial. I like my car, but every time I see a 1995-2003 XJ8 drive past my head turns. There really isn't anything else that has the flair of a ... Are the tires you are using V or R rated? I understand that the Jags have problems with tires with lower ratings. What about pressure? Check your manual. My 1995 manual recommends much higher tire pressure for everything other than the three Jaguar recommended tires for that model year.
Can anyone tell me what names Jaguar used for the interior and exterior colors of my 95 XJ6? To me the exterior is black, the interior tan. The following codes are listed on the door panel plate: Paint= PDT Trim = SDC. Mike
That 90 VDP.. that was VERY cheap for that car actually... I just sold a 1990 VDP with 48K on it for $9,500 and have since turned down 2 offers for what I was asking for the car (Which was more $$..) That Sovereign is not a real steal... full pop retail with those miles. $10-11K is more like it. 100K+ mile cars in perfect condition break $5K at dealer auctions. ... Read More
The 1995 XJ6 I recently purchased did not come with a key-ring transmitter. Jaguar quotes a price for a new one about $180. Are these available at a more reasonable price from any other sources? Can I program the transmitter to the ... Read More

That be the Daimler Corsica show car. Funny you should mention that... Its what I am seriously considering doing to my 95 VDP. It was a show car from 1995 and has birdseye maple wood trim. It does not have a drivetrain. It is now owned by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust (JDHT) and is in their collection. I've seen it and it is gorgeous. Bill
Well.. The XJR is an excellent car! As far as reliability goes, if you buy a 1995, you really want to try and stay with a 5-95 or later production car. I.E. Go for a 1996. As far as warranties go.. the problem with Jaguars is that the still have lousy ratings in the actuarial tables that these warranties are based on (Irrespective that an XJ8 is a more reliable car ... In the news today: BY DAN HART BLOOMBERG NEWS WASHINGTON -- Ford Motor Co.'s Jaguar unit is recalling about 3,550 of its 1994 to 1996 XJ12 and XJS sedans because faulty emission-control parts may cause the cars to exceed U.S. air-pollution standards, a government agency said. About 550 XJ12s from 1995 and 1996 have a problem with the air-pump check valve, while about 3,000 XJ12 and XJS cars from 1994 and ... Read More
I am about to make the big step and purchase a 1995, XJ6, BRG. 74K miles for $15K. Although this is the car I have wanted in a long time, the only thing more I would want would be the convertable. A "real" XJ6, according to purists, anyway, are the models made from 1969 until 1987. XJ40's are the more squared off Jags (look for rectangle taillights) from 1988 until 1994, and the X300 is the 1995-1997 Jags. Some call the 1998 & newer X300's, and some call them the X308, the last number denoting the V-8 engine. Sound simple enough? Now for the really confusing stuff. For quite a while, the ... Read More
I found a 1995 XJ6 with 56,000. It looks in excellent condition...however, from reviewing previous discussions here, believe I need to have a mechanic check it out. Well I am now the proud owner of a 1995 XJ6, Topaz/Oatmeal with 53,000 miles on it. The guy wouldn't go below $18,900 but it checked out great at the dealer. So now my questions are: 1) what type of brake pads to ... Read More

Found this one late! I'm pretty busy over in Smart Shopper.. FWIW, I have 121,000 VERY Hard miles on my Jade Green 95 Vanden Plas. I've had this one since new and I "drive it like I stole it" as the saying goes and she loves it. No oil consumption, and only 3 problem areas since new. I agree that the instrument panel in the 1995-1997 Jaguar XJ's is much nicer. The new one, is set in 3 different wooden holes. I don't know too much about them, but if I were going to buy a regular wheelbase ... Read More
