Thanks for responding. Yea, I did some checking today and my friend says his father has a mechanic that works on nothing but Jags, and works on his all the time, so I'm going to give him a call. I had a neighborhood mechanic just come look and listen to it yesterday, and he says he thinks it's either the power steering pulley or the air compressor pulley. He says he ... Read More
I have a 1990 Jaguar XJ^ Vandenplas. I've had problems with starting the car, need to change the battery. The last time I was able to start the car the transmission light came on, the one that says the motor is in "limp home' mode. The car runs perfectly well and has no mechanical or transmission/shifting isssues. The light won't go off. I checked the fuses and they are fine. I ... Read More
don PLEASE tell me that you found the (an) answer to this problem with the blowers. I have the exact problem just as you described it and as a result I have no a/c in my 1990 Jaguar xj6. Local dealer is no help and wants a fortune to just diagnose the problem.
Well you'll have to have the transmission diagnosed to see if limp mode is from an external or internal problem. If it's from an external sensor or control unit it may be worth fixing. If it's internal, the car is probably not worth repairing, you are right. You could buy a clean, low mileage 1990 XJ6 with a good transmission for less money than overhauling your transmission, which is at least ... Read More
Remove battery cables this should reset your system.
I have a XJ6 and I washed my car then the tranny went into limp mode so I dried it out and it still will not come off. Is there a way to manually take it off of limp mode or did something fried out when it got wet? I never had a problem with it until I washed it and everything is dry, it has been about 3 mo. I ... The 1990 xj and others of its model were fraught with self-inflicted problems. (Jaguar engineers/designers, either didn't know or didn't care about what they were doing); so, the results are well known but the overall style of the car still had its litheness of line that has always attracted so many admirers. The last year for this feline look was 2004. Since then, the xj has developed a portly look to ... Read More
What about the other vehicles in these comparos? Aren't pre-production models supplied for these tests all the time? Well not if they're already on the market, which in fairness the Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and Jaguar all have been for some time now. I'd read in one of these C&D comparos in which Lexus asked for the comparo. I believe it was the first comparo of the original LS400 back in 1989-1990 ... Read More
Sharing V6s is ok, many automakers do that. V8s however, should remain M-B exclusive. Lexusguy, there is no company on this earth that is as good in platform sharing between luxury and non luxury autos as Toyota. Unfortunately very few other companies share that success. The disasterous details of Jaguar/Ford platform sharing has been recently discussed here. The details of the success of platform sharing between Honda and Acura is evident ... Read More
I whole-heartedly agree with your testimony. I had numerous problems with my '98 LS that I promised myself that I wouldn't ever buy another again, no matter how reliable they were supposed to be. In a short 32,000 miles, the steering rack and both front hubs had to replaced($6k job, albeit all under warranty). Then the cluster failed twice, and then the electrical system went hay-wire. It reminded my of my ... Read More
As for the LS400 The 1990-1994 had a flair to me. I remember a line from a Car and Driver review of the 1995 that said it lacked the flair of the less perfect model. That car was too antiseptic to me. There are some posters on here which have commented about Lexus acknowledging that the revision was too conservative. The original model was a timeless design, a la Jaguar. Look ... Read More
Hi All, I don't understand this prestige argument at all...Isn't it obvious a nameplate that has existed for not even 20 yrs will NOT be considered more prestigious than a historical marque such as MB..I think we can all agree on that fact Prestige is a function of time. I do think MB is concerned with Lexus at least in the USA. I distinctly remember a Mercedes VP complaining in the ... Read More
Hi All, Michael is indeed correct. That recall was a one off thing, as the first batch of the 6 speeds had a production fault. Trying looking anywhere on the web to find anyone complaining about a Lexus drivetrain. I'd prefer a one off recall to the myraid of electrical problems that German cars have these days. Try a failing Airmatic suspension or cars with a complicated iDrive system that doesn't ... Read More
What about the fact that buyers TODAY have more choices of high-end lux cars than in the past, say a decade ago, that you don't understand ? Lexus and Infiniti are new entrants within the past 15 years, right ? Prior to 1990, its either MB or BMW... Now Lexus via its LS, and Infiniti via its G cars have provided much better competition to the dominance of the traditional leaders ... Read More
Hi All, Having high end >$100K cars isn't the sole definition of "High End" That's just pure snobbery. Jaguar's XJ Vanden Plas is around 80K these days, yet it is outperformed by LS430 hands down. It goes to show price isn't commiserate with competitiveness. Of course "status" is a big MB attraction..Have you seen their "Unlike Any Other" media campaigns lately? They show pictures of people posing next to their cars..It's ... Read More
Hi All, A tongue in cheek remark about the 5 Series.."There is no such thing as an ugly car, you just haven't drunk enough!" The only BMW I find remotely attractive is the 6 Series..Nice lines but it's still weird looking. The 5 Series looks like some Japanese cartoon artist gone mad. (IMHO) I like the dignified stately look of my new LS430. It's not too flashy. Reliability is still ... Read More
This is amazing. (Last Post) "In your previous post the chart showed 700+ units and you said that was US sales???? I accept 1700+ for the SL500....Allante sold 6700 in 93." No chart or link I ever posted said anything like that. Period. It said (they MBUSA.COM) said 1721 sales for 1993. End of story. You said 700 or 800 in your confused state. The link didn't change from one posting ... Read More
I had been meaning to ask you what you thought of the facelifted 2005 XK cars? I really like what they've done to the lower body. I've seen a coupe in White and a convertible XKR this very rick looking Blue, absolutely stunning. No arguement about the interior, asthetically it was all Jaguar. The Germans then were just leather appointed board rooms in which to conduct the "business" of driving. I ... Read More
It's just like I said before if you can't count all those taxi Mercedes, then you can't count all those so-called "Lexuses" running around in other countries as leathered up Toyotas. We disagree on what makes a "luxury" car obviously. Leather doesn't define it for me. I'm not trying to say you don't know what you're talking about here, but with the engine thing you really would benefit from doing some ... Read More
Why have a CLK and CL? Have you taken the time to look at the two cars? As good as the CLK is the CL is in another league. Styling, features, engines and technology seperate the two cars mainly. The CLK, unlike the CL is also available in a convertible. The SLK and SL. Come on now, you don't see the reason or difference here? The SL is the luxury roadster ... Read More
Hi All, Ah yes, the typical MB argument. Any Industrial Organization class will tell you that the consumer prefers variety. MB offers a car for practically anyone. It's good marketing on their part. If they can attract an owner at the C class Entry point and give them a good experience, the owner will likely move up the MB chain as income increases. All these predictions of doom for MB are ... Nope, no Bugatti or Lotus. VW has found a money pit with that car, it's overbudget and way behind schedule. The car's outrageous engine and 7-speed SMG/F1 transmission are rumored to be the problem. ljflx, Well I've come to the like the Phaeton a good little bit, but I didn't know that massive center console didn't contain a CD player, and I didn't realize that on the A8 either until a ... from JDP: "While Japanese-branded vehicles continue to dominate in terms of long-term vehicle quality, the Europeans have lost their edge over the U.S. domestic-branded vehicles... The 2003 study, which measures problems reported by original owners of 2000 model-year vehicles at three years of ownership, finds that although there is near parity between U.S. Domestics and Europeans in terms of initial quality, substantial quality gaps appear between the Domestics and the Europeans ... My Jaguar is being bad.... I can drive quite often with nothing wrong, but then at times it starts to have no throttle response and all I have to do is shut it off and restart it... fine when you are not on I-95 doing 55. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I picked up my new 2003 Q 45 one week ago. I want to report that I am totally awed by the car. It is without question the finest car I have ever driven. It is much better in every respect then I thought it would be. I cannot believe that another car is superior in some meaningful aspect, one that a driver would actually feel. I am also grateful to ... Read More
Yes it would be an embarrasment and totally ridiculous for the original carmaker to start taking styling cues from a Japanese brands who's sole existence was trumped up to mirror them. And to take something from Ford would be even more ridiculous. No Mercedes isn't totally original in every single respect and every now and then over the past 117 years they've had to take a lesson from others, but for ... Read More
As far back as I can remember ive always wanted to own a jag and lately ive been looking at the 1990 and 1991 xjs series. I test drove the 1991(the seller posted it as "collectors", has 60k miles, and the body and interior are in excellent condition his selling price is $9000). I've never driven a jag up until then but noticed that for a 12 cylinder car it dragged ... Read More
How do you guys find the time to post so much? Maxhonda, I been out of school twelve years now and back then, my favorite luxury automaker was a Cadillac and still is to this day. Cadillacs were pure luxury back then in 1990 and '91 when I begin to take interest in the product. I don't care for Mercedes or BMW back then. I thought they were ugly as sin ... Read More
Donald Peterson was in charge at Ford during the Jaguar purchase in 1990 and retired immediately afterward, replaced by Red Poling (who was followed by Alex Trotman, and then Jac Nassar).
That 90 VDP.. that was VERY cheap for that car actually... I just sold a 1990 VDP with 48K on it for $9,500 and have since turned down 2 offers for what I was asking for the car (Which was more $$..) That Sovereign is not a real steal... full pop retail with those miles. $10-11K is more like it. 100K+ mile cars in perfect condition break $5K at dealer auctions. ... Read More
I'm new to Jaguars, and I'm looking for a little advice. I came across a 1990 XJS with 32,000 miles. I'm hesitant to buy because I've heard pre 95 Jaguars are a reliability nightmare (and especially V12s). Basically, how bad is it? What should I budget for repairs? Also, what's the car worth? They're asking $13,500. Thanks.
Your post seems to indicate that car design is subjective. Your very well thought out post about Audi and Jaguar styling makes clear that you understand that car design is a matter of objective elements. Your objective criteria get replaced with "It's all personal style" when you talk about Lexus. I think you should reconsider the car magazine Lexus double-speak about Lexus styling. Lexus is the most unoriginal design in the ... Read More
Just don't put a lot of stock into what that survey says. For instance, Jaguar used to be well know for being problematic. Still they have strong repeat business because of the type of market they cater to. So an owner of a shoddy 1990 VDP who trades into a nice new V8 VDP will be astonished by the improvement in quality. This will be reflected in the survey, lets just ... Read More
I'd say you'll find the Jaguar much nicer riding, quieter, better appointed and certainly prettier, while you'll find the BMW and Mercedes better handling and more reliable. If you can live with a Saab, you can probably live with a Jaguar, as they are both prone to spotty reliability and high repair costs in the 1990 model year.
I don't need headaches. How come the bluebook is so much higher for these cars than what I read here. I have been given chance to purchase this car for $5,000 raised by $1850.00 (half the Kellybook dealer difference) for a total asking price of $6,850. One meticulous owner but car has 113,000 (possibly 128,000?). Have no problem with keeping up 3,000 mi oil changes and 15,000 tuneups but what do ... Read More
