Summary
What Edmunds.com says
Other trucks simply offer more. Consider a Trooper only if you are a diehard Isuzu fan.
Pros
Large interior, capable off-road ability, outstanding visibility, moderate price.
Cons
Unrefined truck-like handling, mediocre power from V6, limited availability of features and equipment.
What's New for 2002

My Trooper 1999
Vehicle
2002 Isuzu Trooper S 4WD 4dr SUV (3.5L 6cyl 5M)
Review
Living in an almost winter land (Illinois), we found our Trooper an excellent vehicle for this kind of weather, specially when snow, and rain it is involve. We had own this veh, since 2000 and it has 165000 miles with almost zero problems.
Favorite Features
Interior space it is good, specially for rear passengers. On demand feature it is excellent, specially if you have the right tires for winter.
Suggested Improvements
I would love to have a little of better gas mileage, but when it was built we were paying and average of $1.00 per gallon. (What good times).
This is not a good choice

2002 Isuzu Trooper LS 4WD 4dr SUV (3.5L 6cyl 4A)
Review
We needed a 4WD since we moved from Los Angeles to an area that had snow. We bought the Trooper used. It had only 32000 miles and looked very clean. It's been in the shop twice in the past 4 months and the parts are hard to get. Gas mileage was terrible before our first trip to the mechanic and now the tranmission leaks and there is no easy way to fill it. The mechanic found no dip stick. The fluid has to be pumped in under the car. They sure don't make it easy! There are so many better trucks out there, there is no reason to buy 2nd or 3rd best. The Trooper is no better than 3rd best choice for an SUV. It's uncomfortable, unreliable and get's terrible gas mileage. Stay away!

Why don't they still make them?

Review
This is my third trooper and I will hang on to it as long as I can. Through almost 70,000 miles the one mechanical problem has been a $99 transmission problem, covered under warranty of course! The moonroof is amazing and open in some form or another all the time.
Favorite Features
Sunroof, reliability, ruggedness, warranty.
Suggested Improvements
Mileage of course. Seat belts are always getting caught in the door.
Served me well

Review
I've always wanted a Trooper more than anything and finally purchased a used one after Isuzu ended its production. It's been 3 and half years and it's time to move on to a new love. She always made me want drive friends to places and parties. Never let me down on muddy trails, sandy Virginia beaches or snowy Connecticut highways. Always felt safely in control. The stock sport 4WD model came with lots of options but not as many as the LS or Limited. I'll never forget that outstanding truck.
Favorite Features
Original and uncopied design. CD changer. Dependable 4x4 drivetrain. Great traction in all of the elements. Easy to maintenance for the mechanically inclined. Disc brakes all around. Rear hatch mounted spare tire. No major mechanical problems. Rare enough to intrigue true SUV connoisseurs.
Suggested Improvements
Considering Isuzu has dicontinued the Trooper along with several other great SUVs, I can only plead that automakers not phase out the style of boxy 4x4s with the spare tire mounted on the rear hatch. Even though that is currently occurring with the crossover craze.

Great SUV
Vehicle
2002 Isuzu Trooper S 2WD 4dr SUV (3.5L 6cyl 4A)
Review
I love my Trooper - I have driven it over 60,000 miles and it has never gone into the shop. We moved across the country 2 times - the Trooper provided for a comfortable ride, and handled mountains wonderfully. The Trooper was large enough to fit our 2 large bloodhounds comfortably - for 2 days of driving (never heard a peep out of them). I especially love how well I can see the road from my Trooper.
Favorite Features
Visibility, handling, great quality interior - I am rough (dogs!) on the Trooper - it still looks great.
Suggested Improvements
Stepping boards (to get into the Trooper - this became difficult when I was pregnant), CD player, air controls in rear seats, moon roof.
