This is a truck & is built like all trucks should be. Used for work commute & as a family vehicle. Past problems/repairs: Both front pass windows came off track (tried to put them down while frozen). AC leak in 2000. 2 cd players in 2001. Life Maintenance: Oil change every 10,000 miles or so. 4 Batteries, 4 sets tires, 2 exhaust systems from the cat on back. 4 maybe 5 sets brake pads. timing belt @ 75k as recommended. Big repair$: 2011- Alternator, 4 rotors, pads & 2 rear calipers. Never touched: motor, AT, Driveline components, susp/steer comp, plugs, wires, cooling, ps system, electrical, body hdwe.
Pros: Big heavy & beast-like solid truck feel. Spacious interior. Seating position. Body/hdwe integrity. Cons: Gas mileage. Uses oil since 75k.
2011: Tranny slips now & then at low engine vacuum. Never got used to: The side swing tailgate door. Really gonna miss: The worlds largest sunroof. This has been a very good quality vehicle. I'd buy another Isuzu if only they made pick up trucks.
Replace 5/26/11 with 2011 Nissan Frontier 4 door 4wd
We purchased our vehicle new in 1999. Since then we have accumulated 172,400 miles. Accomplish recommended maintenance when required and keep driving. Agree it burns oil but which it states it would in the owner manual. I have driven many SUV's over the years and have yet to find one that I enjoy as much as my 1999 Trooper. If the engine should go out, I would not hesitate to replace the engine and keep driving. Car looks like it did the day we bought it. No corrosion and the paint is beautiful. The only way I would get rid of my Trooper is if they made another one.
Handling, large moon roof, heated side mirrors, adjustable arm rests and the hidden storage compartment.
The oil consumption but it is a non player because the vehicle is not made anymore.
We bought the trooper used. It runs just great. The problem is it Burns about a quart of oil each tank full of gas. Looked on the Internet after we bought it, tears and found the 1998 and 1999 troopers have an oil burning problem.
four wheel drive in the snow is great
better gas mileage, arm rest for driver and front passenger,
At 209K miles we are about to trade in our trooper due to the C4C program. This is the 4th trooper in the family, 3 for us and 1 for our son. We have had no unexpected problems and I'm sorry that we have to sell it now, but the time is right.
4wd is not needed often, but when it is it is absolutely fantastic! Ride is good and the SUV matches its name....a real Trooper!
