I have a 1996 Isuzu Trooper. I think it may have an electrical problem. While I was driving yesterday all the lights on the dash came on, and there was a clicking sound coming from it too. While this happened my ac stopped working. It lasted for a few seconds and the ac came back on. The needle on the battery gauge jumped all the way to 16 during this time ... Read More
Hello, I have a 1996 Trooper 3.2 automatic that has had a never ending battle with engine racing. Every once in a while it will operate at a normal RPM, but usually it is way over 2. It will go down the road at 30 MPH with no foot on the gas. It has had countless parts replaced including the computer. It has ice cold air, and the heater core is ... Read More

Have a '96 Trooper and the auto tranny popped out of OD gear on the highway. Had to drive home at 20mph as it will not upshift. Mechanic friend scoped and shows "vehicle speed sensor". I am looking to see if anyone knows the correct location and part number for this. There is one I can see on the transfer case and then mech said there is one on top of ... Read More
I have a 1996 isuzu trooper and for some reason my dashboard is making this clicking noise and the battery light brake light and other lights come on. Then when the clicking starts my sensors to show if i am over heating or if the battery voltage is low starts to go back and forth like crazy. Can someone please tell me what that is and how to fix it. I ... Read More
whats up where is the knock sensor on my 1996 isuzu trooper? I need to know where it is located because I am having the same problem. Thanks ..... talk to you soon Chris
Hi and welcome to the forum. I don't believe that the engine you have is a GM unless someone put it in, as the stock engine in the trooper in 1996 was an Isuzu 3.2 or 3.5...I am not sure when the breakpoint for the difference was. Regardless, it is always best to go back to basics first......your CEL is telling you there is a code set so it should be ... Read More
I just found this particular forum for Isuzu owners, although I have owned my 1996 Trooper since December 2000. Purchased it with 42,000 miles and now have 81,000 miles. It was strictly my weekend and mountain vehicle (where I needed 4x4) ------ until my 16 year old daughter got her drivers license in May 2007. She loves this vehicle ---- easy to see traffic, nice square shape so she can see ... Read More

Hi there, I am little old New Zealand, and my 1996 isuzu is having issues with the TOD check light. As far as I can tell everything is working properly, but the green rear wheel lights keep flashing and the check light comes on, only when it is in 2WD mode (on my trooper the TOD is engaged with a stick shift as opposed to a switch on the dash). If ... Read More
My kid is at it again, your advise last time was of great Value... He reversed his leaf springs and you guys predicted damage and guess what you were right... Leaf springs are back now in the proper way. He cut his fenders at school today and but 34" tires on his 1996 trooper. he is parking it at the schools shop and is buying a Engine and drive train out ... Read More
I don't know how you have made out so far, but I looked through Isuzu Technical service bulletins and found one for 1999. You don't specify which motor you have in your Rodeo, but if you think it would help, I can email you next week with the entire bulletin. This is just the subject matter for the TSB I found. It goes in to greater detail in the complete bulletin. ... Read More
I bought my 1996 trooper on 78k miles this summer. When I purchased it, I brought it to the ISUZU dealer. They told me this vehicle is in good shape, maybe never off-road before. Howerver, there is something flaws: 1. the power steering pump leaking; 2. engine oil leaking; 3. need to change the CV-boot; 4. frant bearing loosing. For prob 1: I rebuilt the power steering pump and it stopped ... Read More

I am having a similar problem. I have a 1996 Isuzu Trooper LS. Whenever I drive my car and it has been sitting for a while (~12 hours or longer) the engine kicks hard into second gear. Then into third gear it really slams hard. On the down shift, it reverses...kicks hard down to second and slams harder back into first. After I drive around for 10 minutes or so, if ... Read More
My 1996 Trooper has a burned out front right turn signal. Bought a new bulb at the auto store, and now cannot seem to figure out how to remove the housing to replace the bulb. Looks like it may be connected to the headlamp, but did not want to take it all apart until I asked. Any help in directions to make this simple repair would be appreciated. Thanks.
I'm looking at a 2001 Limited currently. VERY nice vehicle. I can't believe all the options. It's got 46450 miles. Had a mechanic friend tell me that it would start using oil by 60k miles - and use a quart a month. Looking online here I'm seeing that several others are using oil. Is that standard for a Trooper? I totaled a 1996 Toyota T-100, and haven't had any experience w/ ... Read More
Doesn't sound like they were "cleared" to me, they just didn't have to pay damages. Sorta like OJ, being found "not guilty" is NOT the same as being "innocent": "April 10, 2000 -- Verdict on Consumer Reports: false, but not damaging. After a two-month trial, a federal jury found Thursday that the magazine had made numerous false statements in its October 1996 cover story assailing the 1995-96 Isuzu Trooper sport utility ... Has the roof design on the Trooper changed between 1996-2002? I have been thinking of options for a Trooper roof rack, and might have a lead on some roof rails originally found on a Isuzu Bighorn. The problem is that finding 2002 roof rails (my model year) is near impossible. I'm thinking that any roof rails from 1996-present would work. Any thoughts? Hi Sean .... You're right about all vehicle having their issues. But relative to other makes, the Isuzu's issues are usually minor. For example, the Toyota Landcruiser Prado in all models between 1996 and 2002 had a problem where the front ball joints would separate for no apparent reason and the front wheels would go off on there merry way all by themselves, while your front end gouges its way into ... I am still a big proponent of Toyota and Honda vehicles, having owned a rock-solid '91 Camry (never should have sold it) and driven an '89 CRX Si that lasted 170k miles. If buying a new or late-model used vehicle today, I would give strong consideration to both brands. But I totally agree with paisan's post #1381. It's hard for an average consumer to prove, but my perception is that Toyota ... Read More
This is the factory workshop manual, i.e., the manual used by technicians at Isuzu dealerships. There do not seem to be any third-party repair manuals pertaining to Troopers newer than 1996. The Chilton's manual that I have covers Troopers but only through the 1996 model year.
Greetings, all. After much research, test driving, and deliberation, I decided to pick up a 2001 Trooper S 4WD this past weekend. I've never owned an SUV before, which makes me the exception in Colorado, it seems. Up until September 1st of this year, I was the happy owner of a 1993 Honda Civic. Say what you will about their size and power, Honda certainly makes a reliable, economic car, which ... Read More

gpm5, your first sentence made me laugh at myself. I was trying to change the engine oil. This was my first attempt to change the oil myself on any vehicle, so I really had no idea what I was looking for. About 2 months ago I installed the Isuzu brand black side steps on my 1998 Trooper. They install quite easily, in factory-drilled holes in the frame, although it took me a couple hours because I'm terrible with a wrench. Anybody with some common mechanical sense should be able to do the job in 30-45 minutes. I ordered from St. Charles Isuzu, which sells all Isuzu parts at 15% off manufacturer's list ... Read More
New York Times had published a list of Potential best amongst used cars for 1996 models. They based this on JD Power and Associates survey for most dependable brands. I guess their build quality has decreased or more likely others have improved quality and Isuzu has fallen ... Read More
