The most cost effective thing you can do is buy another Trooper that has a good motor but is rough otherwise so the price is low. Then go look for the supercharger add-on if you want a wild update. Mine is 1995.5 this is the Trooper that went to "wide track". It is also the exact model that Consumer Reports used for **falsifying data so they could win some free news show time. My tires 255/16 look like they are almost out of the wheelwell, as if they are the widest part of the Trooper. I like that look better than the overhanging fender flair look. I think my 1995.5 ... • manual vs automatic & handling

Has anyone significant experience driving both the manual and automatic grade logic TOD 2002 Troopers? I am still thinking about getting a 2002 and both are available, unfortunately a few minutes test drive is not the same as living with a Trooper. I like the fun of a manual, but I like TOD and grade logic too. What MPG difference should I expect comparing the 2002 manual to a 2002 automatic? ... Read More

  • 2002 vs 1995.5

I was at the Cadillac-GMC-Pontiac-Isuzu dealer next door picking up my families 2001 Subaru Forester that we want to sell, the service was just the inspection sticker and an oil change. I saw three mechanics working on a new looking Isuzu Trooper. They had the computer thing attached inside and the hood open. So I had a look under the hood to compare to my 1995.5. The new engine is quieter ... Read More

Kong, I used the RedLineOil telephone help to get a recommendation of what synthetic oil to use. The guy on the phone seemed to know his product well. I told them my reason to go to synthetic was for better protection when towing my 4000 lb. trailer. They recommended RedLine MTL for my manual transmission. MTL is formulated for easier shifting while still being heavy enough for the synchronizers to work. ... Read More

I looked at the new troopers at my nearby Isuzu dealer. They are all $6000 off because of Isuzu kickbacks to the dealer. There are several 2wd versions that and a couple 4wd and one limited. The Limited looked nice but the sticker on it was $38000. The 4wd units were all dark colors, in the sunny south dark colors are a bad idea. They were all automatics. Then I looked ... Read More

  • RedLine 75W90 with LSD stuff already in there

Written by: boxtrooper on Jun 4, 2002 6:19:12 AM

Even though I don't have an LSD. Will the Isuzu LSD fit easily into my 1995.5 Trooper? Would it be a good junk yard part? Can the clutches and springs in the LSD junk yard part be replaced to make it like new? I would really like the ARB air locker, but $600 plus a compressed air source is expensive and sounds like a lot of trouble to install.

Some differential oils have the LSD additive already in there or say on the bottle that it is LSD ready, check so you don't end up with double stuff in there. I used synthetics throughout my 1995.5 Trooper, except Isuzu wheel bearing grease and Isuzu brake fluid. I have had no problems with synthetic oil. I like it for the peace of mind that I am doing all that I can ... Read More

This as far as I know is limited to 1995 3.2L SOHC engines. There are small clearances and not hard enough metal in a couple of parts in the valve train that when the oil gets dirty fill with crud. Once filled with crud, one or more lifters make an awful racket. Changing to a low viscosity oil and keeping the oil very very clean, will clear up the noise over ... Read More

I hope that even if Isuzu goes out of the SUV business jut like it went out of the car business that GM will provide Isuzu parts for the standard 10 years that parts are supposed to be avialable in the USA. I think Isuzu might go out of the SUV business because the vehicles are built too well. American buyers just want a comodity vehicle that will hold up for ... Read More

I have a 1995 manual transmission Trooper-S. I went about 90K on the original set of brake pads. It was time to lube the wheel bearings so I changed the pads anyway even though they had about 1/3 life left. I put on a new set of genuine Isuzu pads brecause they work so well they are worth the 10% higher price. I tow a 4000# trailer and live in a ... Read More

Consumer Reports is a USA magazine that reported the Suzuki Samarai a long time ago to roll over easily. For that story they got free advertising on the news. That's all it took to adict them to sensationalism at the expense of the truth. Since then they have attacked the early model Trooper and the 1995.5 Trooper (my particular model that I own) and very recently the Mitsubishi Montero (the big ... Read More

Maybe the dash and controls will be different in the Ascender than in the TrailBlazer/Envoy. The Toyota./Chevrolet "Toylet" Prism is a Toyota rebadged as a Chevy and the controls in the Toylet are GM style while the Toyota Corrola version gets Japanese controls like the Camry. My 1995 Trooper controls are more like Camry than GM. Dashboard look and feel might be a slight Ascender advantage for some people. I have ... Read More

I remember driving my 1984 Trooper to the 1991 Detroit Auto Show. There, Isuzu was displaying the prototype for the 1992 Trooper. Next to it was an engine cutaway to view the way it was deigned. Isuzu proudly claimed responsibility for the design and described it as better than any other engine available. Among the standard features is the engine oil water cooler. I did some experiments with my 1995 lifter tick prone Trooper-S 175hp SOHC. I found that the synthetic oil life could be extended 50% by changing just the filter. I was using 10W30 RedlineOil one time for this and 10W30 Valvoline Synpower the other time. Similar results, but I believe that the RedLineOil is a better product. I also decided that the oil brand did not make the difference in lifter ... Read More
