1994 Isuzu Trooper 4 Dr LS 4WD Wagon

Review

This has been the best car we have ever owned. No problems, still on the original rotors. Replaced the starter at 120K. Only oil, gas, and filters. My wife t-boned and they replaced the grill and quarter panels - still drives like a champ. I live in the South, moved to Alaska, drove all the way pulling a trailer. Spent 3 years there, bad roads - the stories about the ALCAN HWY are true, drove back. Haven't even bothered to do a wheel alignment. I'm not very good about prevent maintenance and the Trooper still treats me good - I don't deserve such a good car! I am buying a another car to commute in DC because of the 15-17 mpg but I'm not selling. My sons (6, 11) will be driving her some day!

Favorite Features

No repair bills, quality seats, lots of room, great vis, no rust even after 3 years in Alaska.

Suggested Improvements

Lots of wind noise. Built in roof rack. I can't believe they stop making them. Consumer Reports did an number on sales with their rollover story. Do something about the ticking engine. I had the tick off and on since 100K and I used it as my oil change reminder. Clean the oil and goes away for a while.

Review

Bought the car new in 2005 as a demo and other than new transmission at 65K miles no major issues. Now have 130,000 and getting tired. Overall it has been a very reliable car. Dealers have been a pain but found local shop that has been good.

Favorite Features

Huge sunroof and plenty of room in the back.

Suggested Improvements

Standard roof rack would have been nice.

Review

Bought this truck three years ago with just under 100,000 miles on it. I have not had to put a penny into it as far as repairs are concerned. At 140,000 still starts on the first crank. Tons of room for band equipment and GREAT on long trips. No for those concerned with fuel economy (17-19)MPG average, but will go ANYWHERE anytime. Easy to work on/ Easy not to have to. I love the truck.

Favorite Features

Hi/Low 4WD-easy to set. Grea ground clearance. Excellent sun roof..its huge.

Suggested Improvements

Spilled a lot of cups of coffee, cause there is no where to put it. Stock sound system/tape/CD. underpowered and 4.5 in rear speakers stink.

Review

Since I have first purchased my Trooper, I have only have to make repairs on wear and tire stuff. Like new tires and front end repairs (this was the first time it had been repaired since 1994). I have found my Trooper to be very reliable, but not very cost effective in mileage. It is a great SUV though for the true outdoorsman / woman/ family.

Favorite Features

The side mirrors come in while off roading,CD and cassette player, & 4WD.

Suggested Improvements

A metal spare tire cover.

Review

Bought second new Trooper (Japanese assembled)in 94 for wife's interior design business. Also bought 98 Mercedes C class and an 03 BMW X5 during these years. This Trooper has been absolutely outstanding(as reliable as the germans) for over 10 years- Only had to replace the starter and battery. We think we ought to buy a new SUV but every time we look at and drive the Trooper (washed and polished) we marvel at how new its still looks and performs. The seats on the 94 model were so well made that they still look and feel almost brand new. The cargo area is big and tall. This is an SUV you just can't justify selling. Talk about getting your moneys worth!!

Favorite Features

High and large cargo capacity. Simple and uncluttered design lines. interior materials excellent. Stands tall. Paint still looks great when polished. Excellent infinity sound system.

Suggested Improvements

Small trim items like cargo covers seat back molding could be better. Engine is no speed demon but very reliable. Feels top heavy, but never any real problems with that. No arm rests in front buckets.

Review

I purchased the love of my life, the Trooper in 1994. I've had this car for 10yrs. It has 168,+++ miles with the original clutch (and I tow a boat!). I've changed the brakes twice. Two starter motors, steering pump, shocks, tires and air conditioning clutch. Nothing major. I have been plagued with a noisy lifter from 500 miles that comes and goes. Now i'm starting to get noise from the rear axle and gear box. Nothing bad yet but concerned. I am looking for another Trooper but can only find automatics, I'm a diehard manual transmission only. I'm blown away that Isuzu doesn't make these wonderful vehicles any more.

Favorite Features

Electric folding mirrors. Great for the idiots that are behind with their main beams on. (sorry, brights on)

Suggested Improvements

Isuzu, stop pushing the GMC. Make the Trooper again. Maybe more power, but that's covered with the 3.5 in the later model.

Other than the transmission which I fixed twice @ 110000 and then at 115000 this has been one of the best cars I've owned.I would by another one. BTW the best 4x4 I've ever owed was a 1987 Ford bronco II Engine went @160000 great size for off road and ground clearance.

Favorite Features

folding mirror, great for off road Love the ground clearance.

Suggested Improvements

Make a beefy transmission

Review

All in all, this vehicle has been very good to me. I love the room for both passengers as well as equipment. Living in rural northern Michigan, the exceptionally high ground clearance helps when plowing through the snow. I've had to do mostly routine maintenance except for a new starter at 75000 miles. Now at 95000 and still going strong.

Favorite Features

Automatic folding mirrors are the best. How many times have you gone to Walmart only to see that someone walking by your rig ran into your mirror?

Suggested Improvements

I don't like having to stop and reverse direction to disengage 4WD. Shift on the fly would be nice

Acquired this car in 01. It already had one transmission re-build. Had to re-build it again in 2/03. They must've put the transmission in on a Friday afternoon. Other than that, I love this truck. The size, the build quality, the looks. I'll buy another one when this one dies.

Favorite Features

Massive sunroof, folding mirrors (for small garages), two-tone paint

Suggested Improvements

More power, better transmission
