PARIS — There was a wee surprise this morning at the BMW stand at the 2008 Paris Auto Show. Inside Line has been told by BMW Germany and North America personnel that the X1 SAV, being shown here as a concept, will be coming to North America in September 2009. That's right on schedule with the European launch, so there was apparently never any doubt.

Not only will the X1 be arriving with both six- and four-cylinder gas engines, but the plan is to also bring a four-cylinder twin turbo 2.0-liter diesel engine, the same one enjoyed immensely in the Europe-only (so far) 204-horsepower 123d 1 Series. With 295 pound-feet of torque as well, the 123d returns an average of 45.2 mpg on a U.S. gallon and acceleration to 60 mph in less than 7.2 seconds.

Also confirmed for IL is the news that BMW will also be bringing over a 3 Series with its topmost four-cylinder gas engine "sooner than you think. Middle of 2009."

What this means to you: BMW is slimming down for an ever skinnier-thinking American buying public. The four-cylinder in a 3 Series is particularly important. — Matt Davis, Correspondent
