More power and subtle styling changes should make Ferrari's new 430 every bit as popular as the 360 it's replacing.

Despite what you might remember about Peugeots or the ridiculous Renault Le Car that disgraced our shores so many years ago, the French do in fact like cars. So much so that they share the task of putting on Europe's biggest auto show every other year (alternating with the Germans in Frankfurt). In addition to its status as the temporary epicenter of the European automobile industry, the timing of the Paris show makes it the first big event of the season virtually guaranteeing plenty of world debuts and interesting announcements.

Like so many auto shows as of late, the thrust of the introductions in Paris seemed to be centered on performance. We saw the first public display of Ferrari's new F430 as well as an AMG version of Mercedes' stunning new CLS sedan. BMW had the production version of its V10-powered M5 out for all to see while even Volvo got into the mix with a V8-powered version of its XC90 sport-ute.

On a more economical level, Audi showed off its new entry-level A3 hatchback, a car that will finally come to the U.S. after being sold in Europe for years. With its sleek styling and strong direct-injection engine, it could be the start of a whole new segment of upscale but affordable hatchbacks. Another new car that could raise some eyebrows is Hyundai's redesigned Sonata. With its more upscale look, larger V6 engine and Hyundai's growing reputation for strong build quality, this could be the sedan that finally puts Hyundai on the shopping lists right alongside the Camry and Accord.

Those always hospitable Parisians managed to put aside that whole "freedom fries" thing just long enough to give us a chance to get some decent pictures to go along with our detailed show coverage. Check out the details inside to see how we fared.
