NEW YORK — Today at the 2008 New York Auto Show, Scion unveiled its Hako Coupe Concept, a youth-inspired spin-off based on the boxy xB. Developed by Tokyo Design Division, this concept combines a feeling of American vintage style with more than just a hint of innovation.
Although it may resemble a toy at first glance, the Hako's design soon grows on you with its geometric profile that conveys an aggressive look for such a compact package. Round foglights sit high on the front bumper, and trapezoidal LED headlights lie parallel to a large upper grille to drive home the Hako's spunky attitude. Huge fender flares complement the 18-inch deep-dish five-spoke wheels to create a customized look as if it were just taken out of a Fast and the Furious 4 garage.
"As you know, polarizing style fits in well with our lineup, and of course we love a good box," said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president.
A flat-top panoramic roof featuring a bar-code-like pattern and a vertical windshield give the Hako an upright stance as if it were preparing to attack the road. To complete the package, the rear has similar LED lights and an integrated reverse light and exhaust "hole" that parallel the clean look of the foglights on the front.
Inside, orange and metallic detailing hues epitomize Scion's ability to combine practicality with this new vintage style. The driver seat has a very Midnight Club vs. Gran Turismo 4 video game feel with its center-located shifter "joystick" and art-inspired instrument panel. The steering wheel is equipped with a push-to-start button and a large trackball that controls the entertainment system, consisting of two monitors located on the dash.
What may be the coolest feature is the set of video monitors that project distorted fisheye images from orange filtered cameras mounted beneath the A-pillars. When the car is parked, the driver and passenger can edit the captured video and post the clips online for others to see.
What this means to you: The Hako's groundbreaking innovations and aggressive style create a vehicle fit for even the not-so-distant future. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent
