2008 New York Auto Show: Kia Koup Concept

NEW YORK — Kia Motors introduced its "sporty and sleek" Koup concept at the 2008 New York Auto Show today, saying it represents a new, more exciting image for the company. The coupe's design "represents the future of the Kia brand," according to chief designer Tom Kearns.

The Koup is the work of Kia Motors America's Irvine, California, design center. The exterior design is in a wedge shape that Kia calls "uncomplicated, yet dynamic." It's notable for a "swoosh" along the sides. There's a set of prominent wheel flares and LED headlamps with carbon fiber and black chrome trim, as well as tuner-style additions including a chin spoiler and carbon-fiber inserts in the wheel spokes.

Inside, the Koup has two panoramic-view glass panels that extend from the windshield to the roof, fighter-jet style. Separating the panels is a "mood light" that extends the length of the interior. The dashboard leans inward and features a "race-inspired" steering wheel and a three-gauge instrument cluster. The electronics include a Bluetooth-enabled navigation system with Map on Demand and an eight-speaker audio system.

The Koup is powered by Kia's 2.0-liter Theta II turbocharged engine that makes 290 horsepower and an impressive 289 pound-feet of torque.

No production plans were announced for the car.
