What is it?
2003 Mitsubishi Montero

What's special about it?
Mitsubishi gives the Montero a much-needed boost in power. A larger (3.8-liter) V6 replaces the former 3.5-liter engine. Though exact figures weren't available, initial estimates put the muscle increase at 5 to 8 percent, and the new engine will run through a five-speed Sportronic automanual gearbox. Other changes for '03 include a revised grille and taillights and new running boards.

Why should you care?
We already liked the Montero's luxurious cabin and offroad capability, but felt its sluggish performance was unacceptable in a vehicle in its price class. Hopefully the bigger engine will take care of that problem. -- John DiPietro
