MOSCOW — When the next-generation Mitsubishi Pajero Sport makes its debut later this month at the 2008 Moscow Auto Show, it will be for customers only in places such as Russia, Australia, South America and the Middle East. Barry Toepke, a U.S. spokesman for Mitsubishi, told Inside Line on Thursday that there are no plans to bring the SUV to North America.
In a statement, Mitsubishi only confirmed that a 3.2-liter turbodiesel engine with 161 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque will be available at launch for the seven-seater. However, a smaller 2.5-liter turbodiesel and a 3.5-liter V6 are expected to be available soon after launch. The Pajero Sport is equipped with either a four-speed Sport Mode automatic transmission or a five-speed manual gearbox.
The Japanese automaker says the new Pajero Sport "moves one size up over its predecessor." It now boasts an overall length of 184.8 inches, compared with 181.9 inches for the outgoing model. The cabin has water-repellent seats and a waterproof luggage floor.
What this means to you: This is one you'll have to admire from afar, since it is bound for far-flung markets only. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
