DETROIT — General Motors' low-key presence at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show was highlighted on Tuesday by the announcement of some midyear changes to the 2009 Pontiac G6 lineup. They include the addition of a more fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine to the 2009 G6 coupe, as well as an under-$20,000 G6 sedan.

Pontiac said its "2009.5 model" G6 will arrive in showrooms in January.

A cheaper version of the 2009 Pontiac G6 coupe now can be ordered with a 164-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine linked to a six-speed transmission. The setup includes a new TAPshift manual shift system with steering-wheel-mounted paddle controls.

The EPA says this combination returns 22 miles per gallon in city driving and 33 mpg on the highway. The G6 with the four-cylinder engine starts at $22,890, including a $670 destination charge. The 2009 Pontiac G6 coupe equipped with the 219-hp 3.5-liter V6 starts at $23,995, including shipping.

Pontiac said a special value-priced G6 base sedan will start at $19,945, a $350 price drop compared with the previous base sedan.

Pontiac also raised the price on the 2009.5 G6 convertible by $1,185. The 2009.5 G6 convertible starts at $32,970; the 2009 G6 convertible started at $31,785, including shipping.

The automaker also said it will offer a FlexFuel version of the 3.5-liter V6 G6 as a no-cost option to the standard engine on all body styles for midyear. Pontiac noted that the standard 252-hp 3.6-liter V6 remains unchanged for all G6 GXP models.

All G6 models receive interior upgrades, including a revised center stack, new climate controls and an updated audio system.

Exterior tweaks include chrome surrounds on the Pontiac grille, a revised headlight design and an updated spoiler that's optional for base model sedans and standard on GT models.

Inside Line says: It's a sad sign of the times when midyear tweaks to the Pontiac G6 headline the news from GM at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
