What Is It?
2006 Pontiac G6 Coupe and Convertible
What's Special About It?
With the G6 sedan firmly planted in the minds of Oprah viewers everywhere, Pontiac figured it was time to stretch the name a little further with a coupe and convertible version of its all-new nameplate.
Mechanically they're identical to the sedan, with V6 drivetrains, front-wheel drive and four-wheel antilock brakes. The dimensions are similar as well allowing both the coupe and the convertible to seat four adults comfortably.
Both models will be offered in GT or high-performance GTP trim. The latter offers 240 horsepower and an optional six-speed manual (coupe only), while the former delivers 200 horses through a four-speed automatic. In addition to their added power, GTP models offer stability and traction control along with an upgraded 18-inch wheel and tire package.
The convertible model takes over the reins from the unloved Sunfire as the sole Pontiac ragtop, although in the G6's case there's nothing ragged about it at all as the roof is a two-piece hardtop. It folds away in less than 30 seconds, but reduces the trunk to the size of a glovebox. On a more positive note, the hard tonneau cover hides the folded top completely underneath giving the open-topped G6 a clean, uncluttered profile.
What's Edmunds' Take?
Pontiac has sharpened up its styling and improved the build quality, but our experiences with the G6 sedan left us cold. With few changes beneath the skin, we don't expect the coupe and convertible will be much different. Midsize coupes are a dying breed and the dual personality of a convertible hardtop is only worthwhile if you like the personality in the first place. — Ed Hellwig
