What is it?
Mercedes-Benz SLK 320
What's special about it?
As the name implies, there is a new model in the SLK line. The SLK 320 features a 3.2-liter V6 engine that produces 218 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, with a five-speed automatic being optional. Electronic stability control (ESP) is also standard, and the suspension has been retuned to be more performance-oriented. Both the SLK 230 and SLK 320 benefit from updated interiors and exteriors. Outside, the SLK features restyled front and rear bumpers, body-color moldings and door handles, and integrated turn signals in the side mirrors. Inside, the SLK loses the carbon trim around the center console and doors and gains either aluminum surfaces or two different types of optional wood. Other interior improvements include a reworked instrument panel and ergonomically enchanced seats for which power adjusters are optionally available.
Why should you care?
The SLK 230 has never quite been the performance car that Mercedes hoped it would be. The new SLK 320 should go a long way towards improving the SLK´s sporting intentions. The interior and exterior changes are nice, too. Expect the SLK 320 to be in Mercedes-Benz dealerships by spring or mid-year 2000.
