An iQ from a high-IQ company: Toyota iQ ultracompact concept.

Toyota iQ concept is, the company says, the world's smallest four-passenger concept car. Looks like an accurate claim to us.

Toyota's iQ concept is 30 inches shorter than the already diminutive Yaris.

Despite the small size, the iQ has room for a set of 17-inch wheels and tires.

Inside, the Toyota iQ is a three-plus-one with a fourth seat that can be configured to make space for either a person or luggage.

The quirkiness inside includes a manta-ray-shaped center console, a mock-snakeskin (thank goodness) steering wheel, and purple accent colors.

TOKYO — Toyota Motor will join several competitors at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show in unveiling new city-car prototypes intended more for emerging markets such as China and India than more developed markets in Europe, Japan and North America.

Few details have been released about Toyota's project, which the automaker describes somewhat cryptically as a "radical new small-car concept" with a "revolutionary" design.

Separately, the company confirmed that it is working with engineers from Sony on an updated single-passenger transporter that appears to be an update of Toyota's 2005 i-swing "personal mobility" concept.

Toyota said its Frankfurt stand also will showcase the uplevel RAV4 Cross Sport, two new variants of the Yaris compact and a face-lifted Land Cruiser.

What this means to you: Toyota continues to expand the frontiers of advanced technology, especially in small cars.
