BEIJING — Previewed in concept form earlier this year at Detroit's auto show, the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLK had its maiden voyage this week at — of all places — the 2008 Beijing Auto Show.
But perhaps that should come as no surprise, considering that the market in China for premium and midsize crossover vehicles continues to expand at a heady clip. The segment is getting crowded, with established models like the BMW X3 being joined this year by such newcomers as the Infiniti EX35.
The production version of the GLK will appear initially in China and North America with a 268-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, with a choice of rear-wheel drive or 4Matic. In addition to the GLK350, a choice of turbodiesels also will be available to European customers.
The GLK is expected to go on sale in China late this year. The first U.S. deliveries are anticipated in January 2009.
