EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

Infiniti builds a better FX with a new engine, smarter transmission, and more standard and optional features. Problem is, the exterior styling will drive away more potential buyers than it will attract to its now-superior product.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

The husky V8 engine and adaptive seven-speed transmission at the heart of the FX50 are marvelous. The steering is fantastic, and handling is almost peerless. Fun to drive? You betcha. The FX50's brakes, however, are the only part of the dynamic equation that don't measure up: jumpy response from minimal pedal travel combined with low thermal capacity (prone to fading).

Comfort

RATING

Overall comfort of the FX50 is decided and dictated by the mechanicals that make it so good dynamically, and so arresting visually. Big wheels transmit some road feel and noise. Big wheel arches make rear-door ingress/egress a little problematic. Yet all the seats are above average in terms of long-haul comfort. Be careful parking, though, because of the blind spots and difficult to judge corners of the vehicle.

Function

RATING

A very high level of standard equipment plus an astounding array of options within the Technology package offer a level of functionality above average, even for luxury brands. The area where the FX50 cannot compete with traditional, boxy SUVs is cargo volume which is about average for the crossover segment. This is due to the FX's swoopy body style out back with a high floor.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

Especially on the inside, the FX50 feels and looks as expensive as it is. In this second generation, the exterior now looks a bit forced, as if a caricature of its former self. Otherwise this is a high-quality effort and execution.

High Performer The FX50 can easily go toe-to-toe with a Porsche Cayenne.
