The 3.5L 303-hp V6, in various levels of tune, is widely used in everything from a Nissan Altima and 350Z, up to this Infiniti FX35. Combined with the clever seven-speed automatic and either rear- or all-wheel drive, the FX is one of the quickest V6 crossovers out there. But that means expecting so-so fuel economy. The chassis provides above-average handling and a fun-to-drive personality.
Overall comfort of the FX35 is dictated by the mechanicals that make it so good dynamically, and aesthetics that make it so arresting visually. Large wheels (up to 20 inches are available) transmit some road feel and noise. Big wheel arches make rear-door ingress/egress a little problematic. Yet all the seats are above average in terms of long-haul comfort. Be careful parking, though, because of the blind spots and it's sometimes difficult to judge corners of the vehicle.
A very high level of standard equipment plus an astounding array of options within the Technology package offer a level of functionality above average, even for luxury brands. The area where the FX cannot compete with traditional, boxy SUVs is cargo volume which is about average for the crossover segment. This is due to the FX's swoopy body style out back with a high floor.
Especially on the inside, the FX35 feels and looks more expensive than it is. In this second-generation, the exterior now looks a bit forced, as if a caricature of its former self. Otherwise this is a high-quality effort and execution.
