An Early Look at January Sales
The Detroit Auto show was the big event for the industry this week (gotta be impressed by the new Vett) but the sales numbers are worthy of note as well. The good news is that we seem to have cruised over the speed bump of the fiscal cliff (at least so far). Sales are pacing up slightly over December with retailing sales tracking to end the month around 889k, for a SAAR of 13m. This compares with 1143k, or 12.9m SAAR last month). If we assume a fleet mix of around 16.0% (about the same as December), then January will end up with total sales of around 1058k, and a SAAR of 15.5m. This SAAR is a slight increase over December, but of course, unit sales in January will be lower.
Retail share-wise GM's share is up again. Ford and Nissan are up as well. BMW and Mercedes both are looking at big share drops, buts this is typical for them in January.
