All Veracruz models are powered by the same 3.8L V6 which is rated at 260-hp. Power is adequate but not exceptional for a vehicle of this size. The only transmission is a 6-speed automatic (with manual shift gate) that is sometimes reluctant to downshift as the grade of a hill increases -- but that's where the manual-mode helps. Steering is very isolated which makes it feel a little disconnected even if it holds a line rather well. Because the intent of this vehicle was driving comfort, there isn't much fun to be had.
The Veracruz is an exceptionally quiet and smooth-riding vehicle -- especially in this category and at this price. Road, engine, and wind noise are very low. Seat comfort is above average except in the standard third-row which is as good as one can be in this less-than-full-sized-SUV category.
All the controls are easily accessed and understood. The instrument panel, while being rather boring, is also easy to read. There are ample storage locations and a long list of standard equipment, as one would expect, plus many up-level convenience/feature options such as a motorized rear cargo hatch, chilled bin beneath the center armrest, upgraded audio, rear DVD entertainment, etc. Maximum cargo room space is rather large with second- and third-row seats stowed.
While the interior design and quality far exceed one's expectations for a Hyundai, the lackluster exterior doesn't uphold the same "upscale" intentions. All materials (even in the base models) are very good and the build quality is now on par with the benchmarks at this pricepoint -- even better in some ways.
Comfortable
Because Hyundai benchmarked the Lexus RX350 for ride comfort and NVH levels, the Veracruz is above all else a very comfortable crossover.
Family Friendly
With three rows of seating standard, an affordable base-model price, and a wide range of family-friendly options, buyers who don't want the stigma of a minivan will find the Veracruz a welcome alternative.
Daily Commuter
For those who need to drive a family car everyday, the Veracruz will do very nicely as a commuter. It's exceptionally comfortable and with XM-satellite radio standard, it'll wile away the hours easily.
Cargo Hauler
When the second- and third-row seats are stowed, the Veracruz can contain over 86 cubic-feet of cargo.
