Summary

What Edmunds.com says

A decent buy if you can't spend over $20,000 on a midsize sedan, but the Sonata offers no revelations in performance or interior accommodations.

Pros

Excellent warranty, pleasant highway ride, refined V6 engine, lots of storage space.

Cons

Noisy four-cylinder engine, bland interior design and materials, tight rear-seat legroom, tepid handling.

What's New for 2005

For 2005, trim levels have been slightly revised, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a HomeLink remote transmitter has been added to the LX.

Review

We have put 107,000 miles on this car in four years and it has not given us many problems. The only one it has given us is that the windshield wipers get stuck and you just have to loosen them from the windshield. Other than that this car has given us no problems and has even held up when I had a 2 hour commute (each way) to work each day.

Favorite Features

Exterior design, handling, smoothness of ride.

Suggested Improvements

Windshield wipers could be better constructed.

Review

I just bought this car and I'm already very impressed with all aspects of it. The price of a comparable Toyota or Nissan runs $2500 to $3500 more, yet the quality appears to be equal to them, You can't beat that. Jaguar styling hues (cool) ,solid feeling on the road, handles and rides great, plentiful amounts of torque and horsepower, yet drives like a more expensive luxury coupe. The engineering, over all quality and body fitment appear to be very high. I know of several Hyundai owners who all have had very positive experiences with their Hyundai vehicles.

Favorite Features

The solid nimble handling, luxury coupe feel and power this car delivers. An overall great driving experience in this package.

Suggested Improvements

More Horsepower, Just kidding!!! Really, nothing I can think of.

I was skeptical about purchasing a less known name car. The car has performed wonderfully and I have experienced no mechanical problems. The Hyundai people are great for roadside service and questions. I do not work for Hyundai, but I truly am impressed with the warranty and ride. The mileage is great. The car gets up those mountain roads with ease. I would buy another one any time.

I do not own this car, but a family member to whom I recommended it to does, and I do drive it from time to time. Overall, it is a good midsize car. I thas the special edition package that includes heated cloth seats and automatic climate control. Comfort on long drives is fine. The ride is smooth and engine and road noise are well controlled with only an occasional squeak or rattle. The car was purchased with 23k and now has over 40k. Only needed new tires, brakes and belts in addition to regular maintenance, of course. The V- 6 has adequate power, but my much more powerful Azera gets better gas mileage. Overall, a good choice for a reliable used car at a low price.

Favorite Features

Heated cloth seats, moonroof, automatic rearview mirror w/homelink and automatic climate control. The shiftronic transmission is good for control on hills and traction on slippery surfaces. The alloy wheels that come with the special package are nice too. The warranty is also a big plus.

Suggested Improvements

Gas mileage could be better. No traction control or ABS standard, but with a good set of all-season tires, you don't notice much. The driver seat could adjust backwards a bit more for taller drivers. The trunk is sometimes too small for bulky items, but the folding rear seats help.

Review

Purchased a Tucson 4 months ago and loved its performance. Checked out a 2005 Sonata and loved the shape; looking more like a Jaguar. Find it very durable, dependable and sophisticated. Would recommend it to all. It looks so sophisticated, yet costs so much less.

Favorite Features

Interior and exterior shape and the numbers that are shown on the dashboard indicated the gear change moving from 1-4 when driving, the sound system

Suggested Improvements

The hand-rest should be a few inches fwd; all doors should open when the driver opens his/her door, (just like the Tucson) all doors should close automatically a few seconds as the car starts (as the case with the Tucson)
