    If you lease a car then resale value is important because of early turn in. But if you keep a car for 8 to 10 years, not that important.     My 2001 Elantra was covered under that extended warranty also--and my sister (sold it to her a few years ago) got a new manifold for free recently, after nearly 10 years.     fyi the 2002 Sonata was a fairly old design, first debuting in late 1998. It was designed prior to Hyundai's big push on quality, which began in 1999. IMO models designed after that, specifically the 2001+ Elantra (an Edmunds' Top Used Car choice) and the 2001+ Santa Fe were solid cars, quality-wise, although quality improved even more with the latest generation of vehicles.

    Go to http://www.carcomplaints.com/ and you can get a better reading on the few complaints on Hyundai cars since 2001. I wonder what Toyota will be like at this website next year based on what happened this year. And if I remember when I purchased my 1985 Honda Accord the problems were numerous and Honda had a very bad rep. Now they are in the top 3 in quality.

    Have you driven the Fusion? Personally I prefer its blend of ride and handling over the Accord. I think the current-gen Accord has lost some of its handling crispness from past generations, albeit is smoother without the "feel every pebble" ride from pre-2008.     Yes they will fix it. Make sure you file a claim at Hyundai Consumer Affairs 800 633 5151 and at nhtsa.gov.     to ZOOMZOOM13 - I have a 2001 Sonata with approx. 120,000 miles. I haven't changed my timing belt yet, but am seriously considering it before..... Also, I'm having trouble with trans shifting, which I think, from reading the forum, is related to the output trans sensor.     Timing belt change is due if it hasn't been done already. If you hear any noise going down the road, Front and rear wheel bearings are also something to check out. Other than the starter and a output transmission sensor, this has been a great car. 140,000 miles.

    I have found cars with the same problem across the U.S. and Canada. They can make up any reason to blame this. The bottom line is that this is a bad design.     I did drove a Hyundai baqck in 2001-2003 and it was a "peas of sheet". All they've got to show are the 3 months IQS, the price and the warranty. I'll take a comparably equipt Accord or Camry than Sonata even if I have to spend a lot more, simply because the two former cars have more Japan made component and i trust it than a Korean made one.

    Honda was proactive on their engine and transmission issues. They put a 100,000 warranty on all engine transmissions produced in this time frame, including Odysseys.
