There's a recall that is "officially" for 2001-2004 Sonatas for the subframe. But interestingly, this recall shows up when you do a search on recalls for 1999 and 2000 Sonatas also. Actually the first Hyundai hybrid came in 1995, followed in 1999 by an Elantra-based hybrid and in 2000 by the Accent hybrid. None of those were available to the general public though. I think it might help in cases where people are worried about losing their jobs--which is likely quite a few potential car buyers. I think Hyundai still has some "improvements" they are considering for the Elantra. You might see a 5 speed automatic and direct injection in the near future. But considering the 2.0 liter Elantra engine is dated going back to at least 2000, and maybe 1999 ( which makes it ancient in the automotive world) maybe a whole new engine is in order one built for efficiency ... My 2001 Sonata GLS (54,000 miles) has similar problems. Local shop reported it to me during an oil change. They actually called Hyundai to get a part price to give me an estimate when Hyundai asked if I was the original owner--after they ran the VIN, Hyundai told him to have me call them... Hyundai Subframe success story: The following post is looooooooong overdue I was successful in having my 2000 Hyundai GLS v6 Sonata sub-frame replaced by Hyundai at no charged to me. Please check you engine cradle for rust where the control arms bolt on. This is a very serious safty issue. I have a 2000 where the engine cradle rusted and broke and have talked to over 30 peolpe and the nhtsa.gov has 40 complaints on the same issue. These cars have been rusting from the inside out on the subframe and Hyundai has been replacing them with some persuasion. ... Read More...

Since November 2006 I have been contacted by 25 different people who have all experienced a failure with the right front subframe rusting apart and actually breaking. Approximately 18 people have been settled with, either Hyundai repairing the car or reimbursing for the repair. Most people have been on the eastern have of the United States. I have been working ... Hi, I am also victim for this bad design of 1999 Hyundai Sonata GLS V6. I narrowly escaped from an accident because of this. My car's subframe broke and tire was almost dismantled from the axle while I was taking a turn into our apartment complex. The mechanics in our area said it unfixable.
