    fyi the 2002 Sonata was a fairly old design, first debuting in late 1998. It was designed prior to Hyundai's big push on quality, which began in 1999. IMO models designed after that, specifically the 2001+ Elantra (an Edmunds' Top Used Car choice) and the 2001+ Santa Fe were solid cars, quality-wise, although quality improved even more with the latest generation of vehicles.

    There's a recall that is "officially" for 2001-2004 Sonatas for the subframe. But interestingly, this recall shows up when you do a search on recalls for 1999 and 2000 Sonatas also.     Please check you engine cradle for rust where the control arms bolt on. This is a very serious safty issue.     Check out http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ there are complaints listed on 1999-2002 models so far and more will prop up as they age. Everyone with the same problem should file a compaint and maybe a recall will get started before someone gets hurt.

    You tell em backy did you also know the the 1999 Hyundai Sonata has passenger presence detector before the accord offered it in 2004,it disables the passenger airbags when no occupant is in the seat,even though ABS was optional it was still $3,000 or more cheaper than the Accord.

So far no problems but I am sure that the first system to go bad in most cars is the airconditioner. Toyota put reliable airconditioners in its cars.     Problem could be as simple as getting the tires balanced, also the least costly. Other possiblities could be or a combination of bad tires, bent rims, bad tie rods, ball joints, wheel bearings, steering rack, motor mounts.... Find a good tire shop/repair shop to investigate it. Most likely just need the tires balanced which is a few bucks a tire.
