  • Re: 2011 Sonata: Rattles. Lots of Rattles. [ryster]

If I were you, I would have taken the car in right away, BEFORE you filled out the infamous survey. And told the dealer you would give them good marks on the survey IF they fixed the rattles. A little incentive never hurts. So that's 8 places (although I wouldn't count the speaker problem as a "rattle")--which is a lot for a new car, but not close to "dozens". In 35 ... Read More

Honda and Toyota are two of the best proven vehicles on the road, no question. Having owned both Honda and Toyota that have had numerous repairs, my 91 Honda Accord 2 starter coils fail and a part in the auto tranny that makes the tranny shift, I forgot what it was called, failed all before 100K. MY 1991 Toyota Celica started blowing blue smoke at 120K, and I replaced the drive ... Read More

So if you buy Toyota's and Honda's, I'd say they are NEVER worthless if kept in good shape. People know they are bulletproof to about 300K if maintained properly Honda and Toyota are two of the best proven vehicles on the road, no question. Ten years ago, I decided to explore the new car territory. I had owned three Toyotas before that, starting with 1982 Celica-Supra, 1988 Corolla GT-S coupe and finally a 1992 Camry. With plenty of drive time behind Taurus and Camry, the two midsizers were out. I test drove Maxima, Altima (wasn’t a part of the plan), Accord, Intrigue and Passat. Grand Prix was a part of the plan, but the combination ... Read More

I currently drive a 1992 Toyota Camry that is on its last piston. I will not buy the new Camry because it has a lot of problems even though it was voted car of the year. The Honda and Mazda are both lame ducks for this year. The new designs are going to be released for 2008. And I have never posted on any other forum other than Edmunds/Hyundai. Aren't you ... • Drove a Sonata last week

Written by: tlong on Nov 19, 2006 2:03:40 PM

I was on a business trip last week and had a 2005 Sonata as a rental. To put my own cars in perspective, I've owned an A4, a 1992 Honda Accord, and currently own an Acura TL. The Sonata was a 4cyl and was pretty impressive. Interior was cloth and I don't think it was an upscale version. Plastics were mostly soft-touch. Interior looked pretty nice. Seats were quite comfortable, controls ... Read More

I'll take that advice, Ray. I want a LONG life for this car, as I've got one going to college next fall, and one following two years later I need to finance. This was the best solution I could get when the housing market collapsed due to speculators this year (I've owned the place since 1992... no speculator, me). So this car needs to last 5 years, 100K more miles, minimum. ... Read More

I don't think this needs to be the case. I FEEL the 1992-1998 BMW E36 3 series cars had very good ride quality and they also had very good handling. They didn't have anything overly sophisticated (no magnetic suspension systems or hover crafts or anything), just a lot of time spent in tuning shock valving and spring rates. I think it is definitely the case. Some cars have a very good ... Read More

'Improving handling' and 'ride quality' are almost contradictory. You will inevitably sacrifice one to get the other. I don't think this needs to be the case. I am beginning to wonder tamu2002 what vehicle you have been testing. My 2006 GLS Hyundai Sonata has a very nice leather wrapped steering wheel. It is not plastic, and it is not cheap. I agree with you completely about the armrests as I have previously stated. And I ... Read More

Their cars back then was somewhat built by a backyard manufacturer who uses hammer and metal scissor to build body parts. Suspension, exterior body, interior are so horribly done you wouldnt waste you money on, thats Hyundai I disagree with these comments and have 5 ownership experiences with Hyundai (4 with a Sonata and 1 Elantra wagon) to dispute, no doubt, a non-ownership experience: 1990 Sonata: Drove it 150,000 km. Has anyone had a problem with the belts slipping? I was driving my 2001 Sonata that has 69,000 miles and it sounded like one of the belts broke( had previously started squeeling) and then all of a sudden the car came to a slow stop. Everything was still running but the car. So I had it towed to the dealership and today they gave me the worst information. They say the ... Read More

the problem with that theory is this... Some people have had bad experiences with GM, Ford, VW and other companies in the past. True, some have had bad experiences with Honda and Toyota as well...but for years, particularly during the 1970's and 1980's, folks got so disgusted with GM and Ford that they turned to Honda, Nissan and Toyota and have not looked back.It will be TOUGH for GM and Ford ... Here is the link to a comparison test Edmunds conducted last summer. http://www.edmunds.com/apps/vdpcontainers/do/vdp/articleId=106434/pageNumber=1?s- ynpartner=edmunds&pageurl=www.edmunds.com/reviews/comparison/articles/106434/art- icle.html Edmunds asked Honda, Toyota, & Hyundai for a car priced under $22K. The Edmund's quote showcased in the new Sonata commercial is taken from this article. But to directly answer your question, I say buy the Hyundai Sonata. How about 06 Sonata? If you still have 04 Sonata, you can get GLS v6 for $16,000 after owner's rebate. It will be way more cheaper than Japanese or domestic cars that have less features. You also have to consider that any car with 100,000 miles on it eventually need some fix. Here are some examples from my cars and my family's .... wife's 1994 Accord needed new steering pump, thermostat, ... Read More
