2010 Hyundai Elantra Blue 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

Review

Bought a leftover 2010 in Jan 2011 for 12,200, 13,200 otd. Have conv. package and love the xm radio. Now have 57k and the car has been near flawless. Had a minor brake light switch recall. Averaging 30.9 mpg annually. Keep records for taxes. Better mpg on hwy/trips. I change oil every 5k and keep on trucking. Still have original brake pads. Facing some big bills at 60 k: timing belt, trans fluid, probably brakes, too. Could go $1,200. However, with my new Michelins, I could go another 60k.

Favorite Features

sat radio upright seating huge trunk quiet ride very low maint. near hybrid mpg

Suggested Improvements

trip computer for mpg easier bluetooth add, doing without timing belts should be obsolete; may not have purchased it if I had known

Review

I bought this car used in May 2012. I paid too much, but that's my fault, not the car's. It had been throwing an engine warning off-and-on since I bought it, but the dealership mechanic could not find the problem; told me it was fine. However, with 38k on the odometer, the engine has blown a main seal and is being replaced completely. It appears to be covered under warranty, but I felt no warning until oil started to leak all over the engine compartment. Engine still ran smoothly, good power, no problems...just oil everywhere. And now a replacement engine. Meanwhile I have a 2013 Elantra loaner with 100 miles on the clock. 2013 is a much better car.

Favorite Features

Gas mileage is very good. Not advertised, but those figures are always under perfect conditions and I never expect to get "30mpg" anywhere. Still, I'm running 300+ miles per fill-up, which is better than any other car I've ever driven. The stereo is pretty good for a cheap factory system, and the spare power plug in the console works like a charm without sacrificing the lighter. It has decent pickup, the steering is nimble, and the seats are very comfortable. It also has GREAT heating and A/C.

Suggested Improvements

I do not like the transmission all that much. The "Blue" version has a very low-geared transmission that asks to be shifted at 2.5k rpm. This means you have to shift to 2nd before the clutch is even out at launch (ie. first gear only goes to about 10mph). This makes it a very good cruiser on the highway, but in stop-and-go traffic, I tend to be stuck in between gears more often than not. It just doesn't match the common traffic speed patterns in America.

Review

overall its not a bad car with the best feature being with 3.50 gas prices 25 bucks about fills the tank at 3/4 empty. with the 5 speed manual i dont have to wait for transmission to shift if i need to pass some body drop a gear and just go. the seating is a bit stiff to say the least trunk space easily holds to big duffle bags. the car did not come with a radio but that was an easy fix. installing a radio was a breeze too 1 phillips head screwdriver and a pry tool to remove face plate.

Favorite Features

manual transmission. i love it i control the fuel flow how it shifts and when i change gears. gas mileage in the city is pretty good (25) to if you know how to run the 5 speed manual. clutch is very light. i am not a small guy 6.4 250 i fit into driver seat with very little effort. it does have a cabin air filter behind glove box which helps alot out here with the desert dust.

Suggested Improvements

this is the poor build quality rating. driver side door has awful rattle the slightest thing hits this car its a ding. interior plastics are not forgiving at all and scratch easily. my driver side door and back (trunk side) of seats show this clearly. on cold days there is an annoying rattle in the center of the dash when it warms up it does disappear.

Review

this thing sips gas, is alot of fun to drive since it is a manual trans. i have to keep checking the tachometer to make sure it is still running very quiet at idle. which the idle is low way low around 500rpm??? the interior is adequate for tall drivers im over6 feet tall and no head bumping. overall performance is about what i expected from the 4 cylinder. i do miss my 3.7l v6 dodge but the pain was at the pump. so i look at this little can do car as one huge tylenol on my wallet.. with the 10/100 optional warranty and the dealer provided maintenance it will be a long time before i reach into my wallet to put out a dime for this car outside of the payments and washes

Favorite Features

driver side seat goes up and down height wise a feature not found on some 30k+ luxury cars. the trunk is huge, fold the seats down and its even better. i have looked at some upgrades like spoiler and wheels pricing is rather reasonable even from hyundai directly. trunk lid has safety latch allowing unlocking from within trunk. rear seat cup holder should keeps the kids quiet for some time. of course my first project for the seats was a can of scotch guard. two 12 v sockets in the console. power locks windows and its all good from there..

Suggested Improvements

the pass through from trunk to seats has a small cutout i would like to see this made bigger or eliminated. the tire monitoring system could be an issue for the do it your self guys since that equipment can be costly. an extra layer of clear coat my help deter paint damage better. the spare should really be a full size tire, looks like one will fit really nicely even a steel spare wheel with a plain tire would be nice. trunk lid and hood should be equipped with strong arms not weak torsion bars for trunk. which are NOT adjustable but if you order the spoiler kit stronger bars are included.

Review

The car looks good, drives nice, great on gas and is pretty comfortable. Basically its a good car for the price. The problem i have is the loud knocking noise every time i turn the wheel or go over a bump and the dealership cant figure it out even after taken the car to them three times. I guess that's what they mean by you get what u pay for.

Favorite Features

The price

Suggested Improvements

Put temperature gauge in car. Improve suspension.
