I have enjoyed reading your reviews! I bought a brand new 2007 Hyundai Elantra back in Aug. 2007, and before that I had a 2002 Hyundai Elantra that I had bought used. I am really impressed with Hyundai (more importantly their warranty!). My husband and I have been looking into getting another Hyundai (I currently have a Toyota Highlander. I have no need for an SUV of that size anymore), and ... Read More
Has anyone taken a 150 plus highway trip using mainly cruise control within 60-70mph on an Elantra and calculating the mpg? I expect 40mpg with this test (because that is what the ad says) but curious how much higher it goes. If it doesn't break 40mpg, Hyundai definitely should re-test the Elantras or take a page from Honda. Following my driving criteria above, my old 2007 Honda Fit Sport was rated ... Read More
It has been a really long time since I posted any update on this forum for my 2002 Elantra Gt hatchback. If you did not track, this car was bought new by me in 2002. I have 2002 hyundai elantra. My mother-in-law has a 2005 Hyundai Accent and because she has put so few miles on it, under 5000, she figures she never needed to change her oil or anti-freeze in that time! Things do deteriorate with age. I would change the belt because if it goes, as they use to say in Fram commercials, pay now or PAY later.
I think it unlikely you can find a new engine for a 2000 Elantra. At best you'd get a remanufactured engine or a used engine. And it would be pricey. Putting anything other than the factory-spec engine into the car, e.g. a Honda engine, would be a tricky proposition. You might be able to get a newer Beta engine, e.g. Beta II, to fit, but I really don't know. You should ... Read More
ridiculous is correct...why did my 2002 Civic get significantly better mileage than this brand new Elantra? It's very frustrating. Would not have purchased a vehicle with average 25-26 mpg's, which is about the best I can do currently with this 2012 Hyundai
You're barking up the wrong tree, people that read this already own Hyundais for the most part. Also, I have a 2002 Elantra that has had minimal problems and has 150,000 miles on it. I'm about to get my second timing belt on it and it will cost me around $450. You have to shop around for those kinds of things otherwise people will charge you $750. I'll probably always buy ... I would say that if you can't afford $75-100 to have the car checked out, you can't afford a car at all. With any used car purchase you should automatically set aside 10-20% of your total budget in order to cover any unexpected repairs. If $2300 is everything you've got to spend on a car, you should be looking for an $1800 car.
Just a note to let you know I changed the discussion title so that we can continue to use it after your question is answered. Did you check out TMV on this vehicle? Without knowing all of the details, I can't really do it for you, but a quick check on TMV in my area, assuming the vehicle doesn't have a lot of extras, puts it closer to $1800 private party. ... I've owed 6 Hyundai's since 1999. My first was an Elantra, which I liked so much that I bought a second Elantra 6 months later. Over 10 years, I've purchased 4 Elantras, 1 Sonata, and 1 XG350L. I service my cars regularly and the older ones were still running after 240,000 miles, when I gave them to various family members. The only one that gave me a problem was my 2007 ... Read More

I replaced one of my wife's 2002 Elantra GT remotes last year. First off, I have been working on cars for a long time, and have no idea what a "clutch pin" is. If the car has 120K on it with the original clutch, it probably needs a clutch. Each of these has 120K miles on them, and all are removed to replace the friction ... Read More

Thanks all for comments on 2002 Elantra overheated engine at 51,000 miles, repair or replace engine? Two local, independent shops recommend installing a low miles used engine, not repairing engine. Don't worry. From what I've seen (e.g. in recent movies), the world will end in 2012, so any problems with our Elantras will seem pretty minor in comparison. The Elantra would not have racked up high marks in, for example, CR's reliability survey if it has ... Read More

My check engine light used to go on all the time, right after I purchased the car in 2002, after I got gas, and the dealer assumed that it was from the vapor getting in from the gas cap. It seems very odd that Hyundai would change its suppliers for the 2005 MY Elantra, then apparently change them again for the 2006 MY (the scores improved for 2006). You must have a special warranty. To my knowledge, service rental cars are not included in the standard Hyundai warranty. That is at the discretion of the dealership--some provide them, some don't. I bought a Corolla due to the transmission and the rear seat legroom.
Very positive overall. Seems like a top notch entry. However, was anyone else puzzled as to why Hyundai would tout the following "Its chassis is 49-percent more rigid than before (9-percent stiffer than even that of the Toyota Corolla)" Is it really an accomplishment to boast that the Elantra is 9% more rigid than a car introduced in March of 2002? There was a thread in 2002 on this Elantra GT forum about all the little things Hyundai thought of on the GT. david2 hit on some (BTW two things you mention are on my 01). Things like: Coin box has rubber matting to keeps coins quiet Rubber matting on console horizontal surfaces to keep things from sliding. Elastic strap on the rear of the glove box to hold insurance papers. Inner ... Read More
First let me say I have a 2002 GT and I love it. It has 76,000 miles on it and running great. Lately I've been looking at cars again and of course I'm looking at the Elantra. One of the things that interested me in the 2006 models was the promise that XM was standard. Is this still the case? On the Hyundai website, there is no mention of this feature ... Read More
Hi all, I tend to agree with Warner on this one. I also agree that cars lose the most appreciation in the first 2 years. Anyway, in October of 2000 I bought a 2001 Elantra GLS for 13800 plus TTL. At the time of purchase this was a good deal and there were no rebates. It was an auto with moonroof, upgraded CD and mud flaps. I drove it for next ... Read More
Dale, From what I have read on this site, MD is a great place to purchase a Hyundai. I purchased two Elantras in 2002 and got very good pricing. So here is the most recent quotes I have received for an Elantra 2006 automatic base package. If you own a Hyundai, you can take $500 loyalty off of these prices. Fitzgeraldautomall.com Quote of $13,332 (see website) Nationwideauto.com Quote of $13,247 (see ... Read More
Edmunds has a site that give such appraisals. I plugged in your information and made a few assumptions for things you didn't say (like auto transmission), and came up with $6400 for a private party sale, $8300 for a dealer sale and $8800 as a Certified Used Vehicle. If you're buying from the owner, that's way too high; if from a dealer, it's in the ballpark. To do this yourself and ... Read More
Hey, this is my first time ever having to repair anything on my car. The only changes I have had to make on my 2002 is tires & brakes. Now I too think my thermostat has went out. Can you tell me how you replaced it? This is my second Elantra, had no problems with my first one. I couldnt be happier with Hyundai, have said my next vehicle is going ... Read More
I took my 2002 Elantra to my mechanic who did a brake job all the way around. They said I needed RF caliper. They said they called Hyundai dealer and were told this was not a BTB coverage item. Can anyone verify this? Thanks
It appears to me that your dealer is mistaken. The coverage is 1999 - 2002. Ask your dealer to look-up this TSB # 05-01-001-1. As you can see at the very bottom the coverage stops at the end of January 2002. If your car was made in January your in if not your out. The date of manufacture for your car is on the driver's door plaque. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - --------------------- ... Hi I have a 2002 Hyundai Elantra with 27K miles on it. I am noticing that the car vibrates (I can hear the door panels making noise) a lot when going at 80 mph. What could be the possible causes? I have 2 new tires on the front while the back tires are still the old ones. Can that be a cause?
Hi everyone, newbie here!! I own a 2002 Elantra with 85,000 miles (as you can tell, I love to drive a lot). I have a question regarding fuel filter replacement. I know the manual says to replace at 50,000 miles but a Hyundai mechanic said it should be done at 100,000 miles. So far, I have not experienced anything unusual; but should I go ahead and replace it now to be ... Read More
There are surveys done by J.D. Power that report defects per 100 vehicles. They do two surveys, one after 90 days of ownership and one after 3 years. (They do many other surveys too, but those are the two I am most familiar with.) Hyundai has done very well in the past couple of years on the 90-day survey, ranking along with Honda and Toyota. J.D. Power just released their survey ... Read More
Hey Backy, thanks for the quick reply. I have looked over a lot of the previous posts, and, lol looks you've had a few years of elantra experience (think I saw posts from you in like 2001)....and you came back for more (04 GT), so I guess that says a lot :). Well the problem is my wife will be driving the car a good deal also, she loves auto's, and ... Read More
hey i just bought a 2002 Hyundai Elantra GLS and the dealer found a remote for it, but it wasnt programed, can someone plz help me out with this, and tell me how to progam it?!?! :P
That is not quite correct. First, the issue was over misstated horsepower. Second, the offer did not involve all 2002 and older models. 400,000 vehicles with the largest horsepower misstatement qualified for the offers you mentioned. For the others (including my '01 Elantra), there was a class action suit that resulted in Hyundai giving owners a free debit card good for Hyundai services or merchandize. Here is an article that gives ... Read More
First, escalate to the service manager. If that doesn't help, talk to a Hyundai Customer Service rep (call the 800 number). Hyundai has regional reps who can look at your car. And if THAT doesn't work, I'd tell them that you are going to file a safety problem report with the NHTSA, which can trigger a recall.
My best guess is the Elantra won't debut until '06, as a '07 model. The new Sonata and Accent are due out next year, and probably also the new Hyundai minivan, based on the new Sedona, and maybe too the new Santa Fe and XG350 (XG380?). That's a LOT of new models in one year. Add to that there is a dearth of spy photos of the new Elantra compared to ... Read More
I have a 2002 Elantra GT with just under 28K miles on it. Took it in for 30K service and the dealer is telling me that the rear brakes are worn out 100% and need to be replaced. Breaking's been lousy lately so I believe him. However, is this typical brake wear on these cars? The dealer says that 17K is about all these brakes can handle. THIS statement I'm finding ...
