Test Driver Ratings & Comments
Acceleration commentsExtremely lazy off the starting line; doesn't feel like 138 hp. If you power-brake the snot out of it, you can get a smidgen of wheelspin for a nanosecond. Agonizingly slow upshifts, yet super smooth. Upshifts at 6,250 rpm every time, whether in automatic or manual mode. Manual shoifting via console lever (pull back for downshifts). Does not hold revs to redline; does not blip throttle for downshifts.
Braking commentsNice, short pedal travel with firm effort feel. Plenty of tire squeal and ABS commotion, but the Accent tracks straight and true.
Handling commentsSkid pad: ESC very controlled while cutting throttle, actually better at keeping car balanced than driver because the throttle cut is abrupt and hard to modulate. Dropping throttle had some handling impact but basically front tires just get punished. Steering effort nicely weighted. Slalom: Much more planted on the ground than the Nissan Versa. Suspension has enough roll control and tires are grippy enough so you can throw the car around. It definitely steers from the front, meaning understeer becomes the limiting factor all the time. Accent doesn't have much punch as it leaves the gates either. Bottom cushion for driver seat is extremely flat, so basically you slide around all the time.
